I used to have a large garden in Kemptown that had a set. |

| | | Re: Sycamore tree -advice on pruning needed! Well! I am both astonished and enlightened I'd no idea badgers had become so urbanised. What a nice thing to have in your garden, and what a shame your human neighbour isn't as nice

Badgers aren't that good in the garden, they dig up the lawn, and if you plant anything with Bone-meal, they'll snuffle it out within hours!... and you never see them! |

My f-in-l suffered from this inspite of digging in sheep wire 2 foot
deep. In Bexhill-on-sea. |

| | | Re: Sycamore tree -advice on pruning needed! I think there could be quite legitimately (please pardon the pun) a separate forum on WAB for disputes with neighbours over such matters. It is dodgy ground (*sigh*; another unintended pun) and something that cannot usually be answered in a quick "yes" or "no" manner. It is a very subjective area, prone to what has preceded beforehand, what the reasonable person would consider, etc...and all this depends on location as well ("Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells" may be less tolerant than "Ms I inherited this ramshackle place from my ancient family", for instance.)
To me, the tree does not look unreasonable, but who knows, in a court of law with a clever advocate, the dispute for light, subsidence (due to roots) etc could be argued.
I am currently concerned about an Ash tree at the bottom of our garden. It is at the bottom of ours, yes, but as the bungalows behind us have handkerchief sized gardens that face South-easterly, I cannot see it being a popular addition to our garden! (Hence my ruthless pruning every year .)
As for badgers, yes, they will head butt their way through almost anything. My neighbours are fighting a losing battle over this, lol! (Why don't they just give in and appreciate how lucky they are to have urban badgers???)

| | | Re: Sycamore tree -advice on pruning needed! Hello,
Sorry to disagree, but the law here is not subjective at all. If any vegetation overhangs your property you can cut it back up to your boundary line. If you go beyond this line you are committing criminal damage. You will be trespassing if you enter private land without permission to carry out the pruning. A clever advocate could not magic up subsidence. It is either happening or it isn't. As far as light is concerned, there is no right to light as far as broadleaf trees are concerned.
With regard to the idea that sycamores are weeds, well that's short sighted. Sycamores have been on the British Isles for over 1000 years and contrary to previous messages, support a high number of organisms. One message condemned the species because you need to season the wood for 6 months before burning! and they call themself arbo! Not very 'arb' in my view.
Best regards

Oak? Oh....sheds its leaves and seeds, won't burn green and the wood takes years to break down |

| | | Re: Sycamore tree -advice on pruning needed! The tree has already been pollarded, so all you need to do is cut all the branches right down to the trunk again. You will need to do this every year, so I suppose the best thing to do would be to remove it altogether. It is never going to be an attractive tree again. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
