| | | Re: Ancient Trees of the U.K - where to find ifo on their location Hi Durrell. Have look at these books, they should be right up your street for your trip. Sounds great fun.
1. Meetings with Remarkable Trees (by Thomas Pakenham)
2. The Heritage Trees of Britain and Northern Ireland (by Jon Stokes and Donald Rodger)
Not mentioned in the books is Ripley Castle, not far from Harrogate. There are some superb 'heritage trees' is the parkland there. Well worth a look.
Enjoy your journey! I love to do something like that.

Regards, Chris | Check the woodland trust web site and search on the web for veteran trees. I had a day veteran tree surveying at Ripley Castle, and it was wonderful, but quite a few of the trees are not in public access areas.
The Woodland Trust maps veteran trees with information about access where available, and the trees reported are verified. Some not currently verified near me don't seem to be there, but the verfied information is very good, you will get OS grid refs and more for many. |

| | | Re: Ancient Trees of the U.K - where to find ifo on their location Here are a couple of ancient yews in Surrey which are estimated to be around 4-5,000 years old:
Tandridge Yew:
Crowhurst Yew:
The photos don't really do them justice as you cant really get an idea of size from them, but they are pretty big!!
As already mentioned, Thomas Pakenham's 'Meeting with Remarkable Trees' is a great compilation of interesting trees around the uk, would thoroughly recommend it! Some of the trees are pretty hard to find though, I never did find the one made famous by the Tolpuddle Martyrs! (I must have been in the wrong place completely because I'm sure it would be well marked!) |
