Planted, I would have to assume.
They also have an incredible variety of bamboos growing rather wildly and abundantly all over the grounds.

I think that is because they are dioecious and the female flowers are rather boring therefore it is only the male plants that are propagated and planted in gardens.

Yes, that thought crossed my mind, but didn't know the sexual nature of this plant, but certainly makes sense. Have to say I don't find it a particularly attractive plant!
