| | | identify this quick growing flowering tree Hello, I'd appreciate knowing the name of this tree that lives in the garden. It grows very quickly, has "furry" branches, and the individual leaves are about 4 inches to 6 inches long. Many thanks in advance |

| | | Re: identify this quick growing flowering tree I Googled it (based on a hunch) and I think it is:
Staghorn Sumac
( Rhus typhina)
Family: Anacardiaceae
Hope this helps. |

Hope this helps. | It is Rhus typhina. From eastern North America. Suckers like mad: a nightmare to get rid of if not wanted.
In Germany & Switzerland this is one of the nasty invasive aliens ("Essigbaum", literally Vinegar Tree): I first encountered it on a conservation workparty trying to find the suckers in an old hedgerow. I'm not aware of it being a problem away from gardens in Britain & Ireland.

| | | Re: identify this quick growing flowering tree As a non-native plant I'm not too keen to see it growing wild but as a garden plant I think it's a stunner. Fantastic autumn colours...

If your Mum likes it then leave it alone or I will tell her what you do!!!!
This plant does have it's attractions, it also has a tendency to die off of it's own accord.

| | | Re: identify this quick growing flowering tree I think it's a stunning looking plant with great autumn colour. Looks good when associated with prairie grasses + perennials such as Coreopsis, Rudbeckia + Echinacea. |

| | | Re: identify this quick growing flowering tree As I recall, the sap is irritant - so be careful if you are cutting it.
