| | beech leaf could anyone tell me what this is on the leaf on the left of the pic. it has intrigued me since i took it?

| | | Re: beech leaf I'd back Hartigiola annulipes as well, but it is not a mite but a fly from the gall midge family (Cecidiomyiidae).
There's a nice picture in the Gallery of galls on a green leaf :
According to the FSC Key to Plant Galls by Redfern et al p. 327, these can be hairy or smooth. The galls usually fall from the leaf leaving a small hole (there are a couple of spots on the leaf which may indicate the site of more galls).
