| | Unidentified TREE.
Yep.
I admit it.
I'm terrible at trees.
We've got lots of these trees around Reading - all looking like bare chestnut trees or something, decked out with spikey christmas baubles.
I assume its some kind of chestnut? Like I have a clue?!
Its probably non-native and an ornamental pest....
Any help appreciated please, to an embarrassed black rabbit...
NB. Please click on thumbnail and then the image to sharpen it. |

| | | Re: Unidentified TREE. The detail of the tree is not good enough to ID (probably couldn't any way), a pic of buds etc would be helpful.
The baubles look like some kind of gall, I am sure I have seen that before. |

| | | Re: Unidentified TREE. Looks like fruit of Liquidamber styraciflua to me too. Not native- it's North American + a useful amenity tree with often fabulous (red) autumn colour. + very attractively shaped leaves. It's certainly not a pest- I've not even seen a naturalised one yet.
It does seem to have some wildlife benefit as last autumn I observed Goldfinches, a Greenfinch + a Blue Tit feeding from these fruits. |

I am a true numbskull when it comes to trees.
Note to self- must buy a book on them!
Cheers again

| | | Re: Unidentified TREE. My initial thought from the description was the good old London Plane which seems to catch a lot of people out with its christmas baulbulls....
but then i saw the pic and although a similar idea the fruit and bark are different to London Plane, so im going to say listen to aeshna as he/she seems to be on the right track?

MOST of those many "baubled trees" I see around Reading are London Planes I thought (and you've confirmed I think), but the one above was a wee bit different.
So ta for that.
