The fruit definately looks like Liquidambar styraciflua. Bark is consistent with that too. But beware - I've been mightily confused in the past by fruit falling from one tree and getting lodged in a nearby tree!

Liquidambar don't usually set fruit in the UK, but it's not the first I've seen this winter, so perhaps last summer was to its liking.
