| | | Trees! Me, my Mum & Grandma have been growing some christmas trees for the past 2 years!
Has anyone else grown any?
They take ages to grow, though!
I'm not sure exactly how tall they are, because I'm only looking at them through the Window!
Maybe I'll go and have a look later on!
I'm also growing an Oak tree!
It looks like a twig stuck in the ground, but it's bearing a few leaves!
So, what trees are you growing?

| | | Re: Trees! Hi Greenish,
I used to grow and sell trees several years back. I've still got some leftovers. The trouble is where to plant them out. I ended up giving a lot of them away. From a school sale I bought a baby horse chestnut tree for 10p, it's now pretty large, but no conkers yet. It's very interesting to see how tree seedlings are so different from one another depending on their species. Conifers start off so tiny, but after about 5 years they really get a move on. Eucalyptus, minute seedlings, and but can grow incredibly tall in just a few years. Some need frost and cold periods before they will germinate. Some are almost too keen to grow, like sycamore, ash and willow all over the place, and sometimes in plant pots where I didn't plant them!
Good luck with your tree growing it's very satisfying |

| | | Re: Trees! I have a row of elders at the bottom of my garden and last year I planted an ornamental type of elder with purple leaves and pink flowers.
My sister has had a horse chesnut sapling in a pot for years just trying to find somewhere to plant it!
When I have room (which may be a while yet because walnut trees are huge!) I will plant a walnut because they are beautiful and pay for your care in nuts |

| | | Re: Trees! Wow! Grow them and sell them? That must have been a busy, but pleasing, job! I mentioned pleasing because planting and growing trees helps the environment!
Purple leaves and pink flowers? Sounds nice! I'm not such an expert on trees, so don't think I'm silly asking this: What does an elder tree look like?
In my village there's this public place with lots of trees in the middle, and every year I go and find some walnuts! One year I let them dry on my windowsill so I could plant them, but I left them too long and they turned all black and rotten!
Deer Stalker, did you plant them, or did someone else?
Thanks for all of your replys!

Bethany | I suppose Elder might be considered more of a shrub, its quite low growing - maybe 4m or less and is often found as part of a hedgerow or as an understorey (trees that are gowing beneath the canopy of the tallest trees) plant in a woodland. They have sort of dark green leaves lots of small berries in the autumn that you can make into wine and foamy cream flowers in the summer that smell beautuful and can be made into cordial or more wine . They have twigs that snap and are full of pith (squishy white stuff) rather than wood. They have a very definate smell if your crush the leaves and can grow branches over a metre long or more in a year!
I actually really like them and apparently so do badgers because you often find badger setts have them growing around the holes.
hang on I'll see if I can find a pic in the Gallery
T'daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
(Thanks Black)
