| | | The Wild Service Tree Hi everyone
I've just joined you.
In the Photo Gallery I've uploaded three pictures for you relating to the rare Wild Service Tree. This tree apparently grows in ancient oak woods and this is exactly where I found it growing. In fact I found two mature trees and quite a number of saplings which presumably had come about through seeding.
Research tells me that public houses named 'The Chequers' relate to the old nick name for the Wild Service Tree and not the board game. This nick name came about as a result of the unique chequered appearance of the trees bark, albeit not of a black and white appearance ( please see photo in the Gallery)
I hope this is of interest to some of you.

Geoff | That is interesting .Thanks for that and a Warm welcome to WAB aswell Geoff ! Service is apparantly a corruption word of Sorbus as are Mountain Ash or Rowan. I'd be keen to find out what qualities the wood is useful for!?! As Rowan is a good material with heavy duty uses i.e Ship Building and Fence Posts.

I recieved an e-mail telling me my photos of a Wild Service Tree in Autumn, a close up of the 'chequered bark' and a close up of an individual leaf, which some often confuse with a maple- were not up to standard for the Gallery - despite there being no other pictures of this rare tree!
However, if you, or anyone else on the site would like me to send you these photos, which are very clear and detailed, please contact me by e-mail and I will foreward them to you with pleasure. Geoff geoffjring@yahoo.co.uk |

Geoff geoffjring@yahoo.co.uk | Well the modators are pretty sharp when it comes to quality of photos a few of mine have been rejected before! You can upload them under the unidentified cat and then copy and paste them to your thread as it goes Geoff.

Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of following your advice now.
I've obviously missed the point of what the Gallery is all about -
I believed - among other uses - it was a visual reference guide. ''A picture is worth a thousand words', as the old saying goes. It seems I was wrong. My reason for uploading the photo's was not to ' win any prizes' for my photographic skills ( Photography is not my hobby or interest ) but simply to give those who have never seen the rare Wild Service Tree an opportunity to view it in photographic form - as against a colour sketch. As I mentioned earlier - simply a refence guide.
It seems however, as you have had photographs rejected, the Gallery is more of a page for enthusiastic, or professional photographers, to compete or demonstrate their skills to one another, using the editors as judges and the viewers as an audience - how very odd!
I've visited a few other sites dedicated to the same subjects as this one and have had the photo's accepted for the reason they were intended - a photographic refence guide. That's all they ever were meant to be in the first place.
Thanks again for the info mate.

| | | Re: The Wild Service Tree Welcome to the forum, very interesting first post
The Gallery is there for any member to submit photos to, I'm not a professional photographer and have only had my camera a year, some of my pics have gone in there, some not. They have to be strict on quality, sharpness etc and to be honest the mods work very hard on the site. We don't put pics in there to 'show them off', they're there because someone wants to share something they've seen and appreciated. As Jez said, you can include your pics in your post via the unidentified or forum categories. This way we could see your pic whilst reading your post. Looking forward to seeing them.
