| | | Tree Identification Could someone help with tree identification. There is a tree in my garden which I have never identified. Yesterday I noticed it in flower and thought that I really should try to find out what it is.
I am attaching a couple of photos, one of the flower, the other of the tree as it is now. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the leaves (which may make identification difficult!).
It is 20 - 30 feet high. I would guess that it was not planted here by the previous owners and probably grew here naturally. My garden consists mainly of deciduous woodland - oakes, ashes, beeches, silver birches, a common lime and an alder by the pond. This tree is different from all of those.
I hope someone can help.
Many thanks,

| | | Re: Tree Identification From the flowers I wonder if it could be an Elm, possibly a sapling.
Shouldn't be too long to wait for the leaves which will give a better chance of identification.

| | | Re: Tree Identification I didn't think of elm. I have googled it and have not found anything that exactly matches it and there is only one elm photo in the Gallery here. I guess Dutch Elm disease really took its toll.
We have lived here for 20 years and the tree was quite big when we moved in. I am not sure exactly what constitutes a sapling when a tree can live for hundreds of years! I guess I may have to wait for the leaves but that may prove difficult since the lower branches are out of reach.
Thanks for you help, Wildone.

| | | Re: Tree Identification Seems that Elm saplings are living for about 30years before sucumbimg to Dutch Elm Disease.Of course it might be a different variety of Elm which is not suseptible to the dread DED.

| | | Re: Tree Identification Looks more like Ash from the flowers. I will probably be wrong, I usally am, but the flowering photo seems to show the dark blackish buds further up the branch.

Ollie | JennyB states that she has Ash in the garden along with several other species and that this tree is different to all of those. Really need to see the leaf to be sure of an ID.

Many thanks,
Jenny | I have printed the pics out and left a note for our ops manager asking him what it is. He knows eeeeeverything about trees so I will hopefully have a definitive answer for you in the morning.

| | | Re: Tree Identification Here are the flowers of a common ash which I also photographed yesterday. They seem different unless one of them is further out than the other. Or, maybe it is a different kind of ash?

Jenny | They look the same to me! With the second one in a later stage of flowering than the first pic | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
