| | | Tree ID please!!! I'm very sorry - I'm awful at plants.
This is probably an incredibly common ornamental tree. I just don't know it.
We found it opposite a pub in oxfordshire.
I think the colour is fantastic and would like to know what it is!
All help much appreciated.
Thanks

| | | Re: Tree ID please!!! Wonderful autumn colour! This plant, originally from North America, suckers regularly, which can be a mixed blessing- though to see a little colony at this time of year, especially if associated with grasses + attractive late flowering prairie plants like Rudbeckias can look stunning. |

| | | Re: Tree ID please!!! Did it look like this before you went in the pub?
Yes, much more ash-like leaves (but far too big). Perhaps Tiggrx will tell us - are there any European Rhus species or are sumacs purely American? Quote:

| | | Re: Tree ID please!!! The stags horn name does exactly what it says on the tin as the young shoots/saplings have a velvety covering on the stems just like a stags ...
Be wary of this plant though...It is a very very rapid grower and coloniser.Spreading rapidly by way of seed and rhizomes. We have a large patch on a bank on our driveway...im figthing a battle with my mother to get rid of it, as its very close to reaching the national trust woodland we share on the other side of the drive. But she wants to keep it for the few days it turns red in the autumn before dropping its leaves....all that for a wek or so? hmmm
Leaves can be used as a tobacco sustitute and the fruit made into a kind of lemonade or used for dying ...apparently.
Have seen conflicting views on wether the sap is or isnt harmful so assume that it is to be safe
Just be mindful where you plant it as its a non native and can be everywere before you know it if not kept in check.
