Try googling for

and look at the first few returns, you will also find some emoticons are trade marked ! (whatever next) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoticon (bottom of page)
Emoticons were all originally text (back in the days when we had telex machines) now they are mostly taken to be graphics or smilies with auto conversion of emoticons to smilies, so -

Yes, be careful downloading smilies. Some require permission, whilst other sites offer free downloads.
I am still having trouble finding a decent tongue in cheek though, and I have been searching the net for a while.
More and more smilies are becoming animated these days too. |
