| | | Best buy What has been your best buy in the last 12 months. For me it has to be Merrell walking shoes and a heartbeat monitor. I am up to walking at least 6 miles a day now. 3 in the morning before work and 3 in the evening. Usually the same route, either back to front, only streets but will be back in the park as soon as it gets light again. |

My Zeiss FL 8x42 binoculars. A marvellous purchase, and I wouldn't be without them. |

I have bought far too much stuff in the past 12 months inc new laptop, pda and loads of bushcrafting equipment, but I think my favourite buy is a swanndri bushshirt, which is the best outdoor shirt/jacket you can get.............Jon |

Technically it doesn't go in this best buy catergory because I was given it for free by a friend. It is a Mecury Vapour Moth Trap and once the spring is here you will see this trap out in the garden most weekends collecting my garden moths. I am by no means an expert on identyfying moths but love trying to work out the different species and also photographing them.

I'm just getting into mothing myself, I've got a couple of good friends that have been mothing for years & I've started going with them.
I find it fascinating & very addictive, there's alot to learn when it comes to moths, plus theres an added bonus, you get to photograph some stunning insects that you would otherwise rarely see. |

He is running a new Mercury Vapour as well as an Actinic and this trap was going spare.
I must admit I do enjoy getting up early, collecting the moths and looking at them later in the day, photographing them and then trying to ID them. It also gives you something else to do in the more notoriously quieter birding months around June.
I have put a few of my photographs in the Moths gallery but hopefully I will add more. The trouble is there doesn't seem too much interest in them so I stopped posting them to the gallery. |

The chaps I go out with usually run 4 or 5 MV traps plus 2 actinics, then they set up an MV blub suspended over a white sheet, this is fantastic fun as you catch the moths as they come in, it can get very frantic, plus the bulb attracts other insects as well, Beetles, Hornets & even the odd Dragonfly!
As for posting moth photos, keep posting them, I'm sure loads of people will be interested in them, I know I am. |

I usually place in a position near the washing line and at the same time hang a white sheet over the line quite near to the trap. This does catch me moths both in the trap and on the sheet.
BTW I did catch a Brown Hawker in the trap last year and I have posted a photo of it in the gallery. |
