Monkey World boss Jim Cronin dies

Jim Cronin, the founder of Monkey World ape rescue centre, has died aged 55.

Mr Cronin died in hospital in New York on Saturday afternoon after a short illness.

Monkey World, near Wool in Dorset, was set up in 1987 to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent home.

The centre, which is home to 150 apes of 15 different species, is now at the forefront of a worldwide campaign to stop the illegal smuggling of apes.

Mr Cronin and his wife Alison established the centre's worldwide reputation for excellence in primate rehabilitation.

They also worked with governments to rehome abused animals and campaigned to stop the illegal hunting, smuggling and sale of endangered species.
Liver Cancer, another victim to cancer
A sad day really, I was a yearly visitor with my children and it was always a great day out.

oh wow, that's really sad. i had a great deal of admiration for the work they do. i've been to the centre a few times, and watched with interest as it grew from mainly chimpanzee rescue into a first rate rescue, research and breeding centre for primates.

What really Sad news.. I am in shock
I have watched the TV programme since it started and got hooked immediately, What an amazing couple they were and the work they did was unbelievable..
The summer before last I finally got to go to Monkey World and had the best day out i have had in a long time, It is a fantastic Place and I rounded the visit off by actually adopting a Monkey and still always wear a T shirt I brought there..
I have encouraged everyone i know going down to dorset to take time out and visit the Sanctuary.. No one has ever come back disappointed...
The world is a worse place with the loss of Jim

This is very sad, It's always the good ones that go. Hope the good work continues, which I'm sure it will. A sad day for the animals.

Re: Monkey World boss Jim Cronin dies

Sad news indeed. From what I saw of him on the TV show, Jim was absolutely dedicated to his cause.
Condolences to Alison and all the Staff at Monkey World, and to the Primates who will never see him again.
