Re: Spelling Issues

Standardized spelling is a pretty recent thing 150-200 years at most. Many intelligent people cannot spell and it pleases me to see them post on forums without being picked over, spell checkers do not help when nearly every other word is wrong. David Formosa's site is down but here is a link to the google cache.

Re: Spelling Issues

if i wanted to join a forum about grammar, spelling and general literacy i would have looked for one and joined it. if im unsure what a poster means i can ask. im not going to get get upset if some one says 'the hole thing' rather than the 'whole thing' i can read stuff within the context its posted.
if spelling is such a massive issue then ignore the badly spelt/badly spelled posts.
its like listening to a debate about bbc newsreaders wearing ties - it might look nice but it doesnt alter the news.

Don't know about rude but some scripts and colours are difficult to read. If the aim is to make people look at them, it could have the opposite effect.

Re: Spelling Issues

As a complete technophobe, I'm just impressed when someone knows how to do something like using a different colour ink, although of course I can't read them!
That's a slight exaggeration. I'm just acting 'daft old bat!' That way, when I really am, people will think I'm still pretending!

Re: Spelling Issues

Quite right, of course .... but ... such things can affect the way that the viewer/reader interprets the news (or whatever) or whether they bother to read/watch on ....

Exactly. Whilst the colour annoys me I tend just to ignore the post

Re: Spelling Issues

Well I have just had a read of this thread after having ignored it at first. I now wish that I hadn't bothered to read it, as I will feel very self conscious in future about adding any posts. My grammar is atrocious and my spelling isn't much better due to a practically non existent education. It saddens me that people take such harsh views of others posts and contributions.

Re: Spelling Issues

See? SEE? Why does it matter? Now Kerry feels she can't post without being self concious! Why are her opinions less valid than anyone elses? Why are mine because I make spelling mistakes? WHY DOES IT MATTER?
I know it matters on the grand scheme of things, and I'm the first to object about the dumbing down of the BBC news, etc., but this is a wild life forum, for heaven's sake!
Can't we live and let live? If you want to write your posts in sky blue pink, or mirror writing I don't care, if I'm interested in what you've got to say! I'll ask if I don't understand!
Got to stop, I'm running out of exclamation marks!!!!!

Re: Spelling Issues

Well I hope those guys that made this such an issue feel really proud of themselves.

YOU look to have lost us a member just because YOU feel that everybody should spell correctly on a wildlife forum. I have to wonder whats going on in the heads of people that would get upset by bad spelling.

Well i wouldent of beleived it, but my GFs dad believes in it, he
reckons that it was becuase of wot he did that made me findout whre he
was staying and then want to go and see him, but as far as i was
concernd it was just the fact that id found out , by chance, and then
decided myself that i would go and see him, its a bit creepy to think
that i could of been influenced into it by him from a disstance. But
he did say that i couldent of been made to do anything that i dident
want to do. He says that it only worked cos i wanted to see hm again
anyway, and so we both wanted the same thing. Its just a bit of a
weird coeinsidence. I dont kno wot to think about it realy.
As far as I'm concerned whether one wants to make a fuss, ignore, or simply respond says more about the reader than the writer. On other forums there are some worse spellers, but even so they are communicative and can be understood without difficulty.

OTOH multicoloured messages IMO are mainly the work of cranks and loons.

I wouldnt worry about it if i was you mate - a good read through this thread shows that a lot of members dont give a good oooo about how things are spelt or gramatised (is that a word ? - do i care ?)

In my view if anyone i going to judge you on such things rather than your character or the content of your post then their opinion isnt worth worrying about anyway.

I'm the worlds worst for spraying commas, hyphens and fullstops about , again due to not being taught the rules when i was younger , but it dont (or doesnt ) bother me, i'm also notorious for posting badly spelled posts while drunk or due to typing too fast in the heat of the debate.

This doesnt bother me , doesnt bother the moderators (except for the time that I inadvertently put an I rather than an O in the sentence " ... today i have taken many shots..." ), it doesnt bother my freinds , and it doesnt bother 99% of the rest of the members - IMO if anyone is bothered by such things it is their problem not mine and they can add me to their ignore list if they dont want to read my posts.

what I'm trying to say is dont worry about it there is no need to feel self conscious just join in with what is generally one of the most freindly and accepting wildlife communities on the web.

i can understand the need to be correct with tech issues like cameras but im with kerry on this general posts dont need to be works of shakespear. is it better to have a wonderfully grammatically correct post or a good evocotive from the heart post. im never going to post latin names or the tecno spec of my camera but i dont knock those that do.
my interest in wildlife is just that an interest not a way to diss folk with less knowledge. im here to learn and in those rare occaisions i can pass some knowledge on i will.
an interest in wildlife isnt a competition on any level least alone spelling. i enjoy meerkat manor am i going to study meerkats in minute detail and pull everyone who hasnt studied them to bits no im not.

Re: Spelling Issues

I think, like Mike suggested, we should just let this thread die a natural death by not posting on it anymore
