| | | New "National Anthem" The suggestions for this have either been pop songs of which I've never heard or things that I don't quite understand. I quite like Blake's 'Jerusalem' but this still has religious implications (and might even be found objectionable in "Israel" ).
The only thing thing that might suit me is ' Iamgine by John Lennon - could be quite rousing at appropriate times?
Or should someone be employed to write an absoloutely new song? Look what happened in Australia ....

| | | Re: New "National Anthem" What I meant to ask was, is there something that relates to the country, the land, itself and what things should be mentioned? Oaks? &c Anyone want to prepare a poem/song? And yes, that was ' Imagine - typing hand gone - off to recuperate ....
PS: the Australian example was not a joke - although many people saw it as such. 'Waltzing Matilda' was an interesting, entertaining, singable song and evryone like it. But it was far from the conventional view of an anthem so "they" (whoever they may be ...) wanted to turn it into something more dignified, staid &c ... and ended up with something boring that no one (even Australians) knew .... | | | Re: New "National Anthem" Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a home to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you, my friend, will see
That you can't beat a Yorkshire Tea,
(You can't beat a Yortkshire Tea)
Ben, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
There's one thing you should know
That Silverstone is not far from Stowe
(Silverstone's not far from Stowe)
I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"
I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"
Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend who lived near junction 10
(a friend) From junction ten
(like Ben) From junction ten |

| | | Re: New "National Anthem" Agreed, everyone would know the tune - like the idea. What would be the words? Or do we all make them up as we go along? Might not be bad idea - can't be any worse than the words I've heard with the old anthem! Quote:

It's 2010, England's first World Cup Final appearance since '66. Two minutes before kick-off, the players line up, the crowd fall silent......drumroll....

"Where be That Black Bird Be" by the Wurzels | Or, being ridiculous .... do the combine harvester one. Oooh ah, ooh ah. Yes, all these ideas seem to be working towards those singers who aren't very good with word, don;t they?
I suppose that, over several decades (having said this, I don't remember hearing it for ten years! ) the 'na, na, naa na; na, na, naaa; say goodbye ...' song was one of the most popular chants. Particularly appropriate at British international games .....
That one has the advantage not only of having very few words but also having little in the way of tune. |

"Rum ti tum, ti tum, ti tum. Rum ti tum, ti tum tum" | I must come clean here. The original idea came from Billy Connolly, but it's so good I had to share it.

theme [although, personally, I think that was stolen from an earlier pop song - can't remember by whom ..... }]
Yes, I'd go for the Kop song; although I've never been to Anfield I've been in the visitors end plenty of times when Liverpool were playing. Thankfully not at Hillsborough that time ... But would supporters of other clubs reject it offhand?
Yes, there are so many good alternatives aren't there?
But put it to a committee and a vote and we'd probably end up with something by Cliff Richard

| | | Re: New "National Anthem" Quite so, it must be 'British' rather than anglo-scot-welsh - I was only joking about Ally's Army! Someone mentioned the World Service programme music which, as I remember, was a composite of four folk tunes - Danny Boy being the only one I recall ... but could anyone sing along to it? Or even 'na na naa'? Quote:

I would personally go for Land of Hope and Glory as an English Anthem |
