the scottish mountaineering council is asking people not to leave memorials or scatter their loved ones ashes on peaks like ben nevis as the ashes are altering the soil structure!

I suppose at the time it seems the right thing to do and the consequences of something that seems so minor are not at the forefront of your mind.
