The things we do to get a photo

Well a few weeks ago I met Andrew and Pete and romped across Exmoor in the rain got muddy and wet and hopped skipped and jumped over a stream and got called a nutter Well Andrew I wonder what you would have called me today I met Beryl in our local park for a nice walk around looking for something to photograph.Saw a buzzard circling which was exciting.Too high for the a photo though. We were stood on a small bridge across the brook that runs through the park and were talking about my new camera.I was showing her the adapter ring and UV filter that I got for a song on ebay and was saying about saving for lenses now I have the adapter ring and Beryl was looking at the adapter.
Well Beryl has arthritis in her hands which occasionally cause her to lose her grip on things.Today was the day her hands let her down.Whoops she dropped it and it rolled through the bars and dropped below. The lens cap that came with the adapter and filter dropped on a narrow ledge but the adapter bounced and went plop into the stream.Poor Beryl was mortified and wanted to take me to the camera shop to replace it.I reassured her and said I would climb down to retrieve it,so I handed her my cameras and carefully climbed down the muddy bank.I was then on top a 4ft wall so had to sit down and jump down to the small path beside the brook.I picked up the lens cap then looked into the water. It wasn't very deep only a few inches and you could see the bottom easily.
Oh dear,no sign of the adapter.Uh oh I thought. The water was running pretty fast so I realized it had been swept downstream so shouted to Beryl that I was going to walk down and see if it had got caught in anything, but in my mind I didn't hold out much hope. But off I trotted keeping my eye on the water all the way.Brambles kept getting me so much I found a stick and was able to push them aside to get past.I noticed the speed of the water was slowing up as I went along but when I looked up I realized the path was coming to an end and that there was no way of walking any farther without going in the water.
I needed those good wellies of yours Boddie .
Just ahead there were 2 large rocks that had fallen into the water right on the side where the adapter would probably be so I walked towards them and as I looked down before I reached them there was the adapter sitting on the bottom of the stream. What a relief not only for myself but for poor Beryl. The last thing I wanted was for her to be out of pocket after all she is a pensioner.
Well then I had the problem of getting back up.There was a ledge just above which I easily found a way to get on but then there was a very steep slippery bank was mud grass and dead leavesWith no one there to help I thought I am stuck how the heck am i going to get up there.Beryl was back at the bridge and would not have heard me shout even if she had she would not have been able to pull me up and it would have been very embarrassing if she had to call for help.So I gritted me teeth and on my feet and hands crawled slowly and carefully up the bank.It was pretty slippy but my boots just about managed to grip and I hauled myself up.Was I glad to see the railings within my grasp as the last bit was a bit precarious to say the least.I hauled myself up and over the bars and made my way back to Beryl.Poor thing she just could not stop apologizing and felt so bad about what had happened I had to tell her to stop.I had it back It was in one piece and she hardly did it on purpose. So ended a gentle walk in the park and only a couple of photos of a Robin and a duck to show for it.I am now expecting some amusing verse from her one of these days

Re: The things we do to get a photo

Well here it is. Yes evry word ir true and I was waiting on the bridge wir 3 cameras hanging round my neck ( two being CB's) and peeps walikng past wondering what I was going to dowith 3 cameras. Oh dea
Well here is you littl ditty CB. YThank you for forgiving me.

Whilst on a wildlife trip today
CB said "here’s my camera adapter ring look"
I said "oh how nice is it new"
And accidentally dropped it into the brook

I said "Oh I'm terribly sorry”
As she stood looking over the bridge
It was whisked away like a pooh stick
But fortunately there was a ridge

CB clambered Down the embankment
Into the brook below
As she walked along the t narrow ridge
She said "I'll find it you know"

Well fifteen or so minutes later
CB had climbed out of the brook
I let a sigh of welcome relief
As she yelled "I have found it just look"

Well maybe like me Beryl has it set on vivid.Depends on what you like and I personally like it shows the bird off well seeing how high it was.I couldn't even get a shot.If I try photos of birds in flight they always look blurred.

Actually No
Just lightned it slightly . May be if I sent you the frme as it was you could make it look good The sun was so incredibly bright it was really dazzling. and the bird kept flying in front of the sun well that is to say it was between me and the sun all the time.

Please dont think I am having a go but if you have had to lighten that sky there is something wrong with your camera, or the settings are wrong on it

I'm not thinking that at all.
It was a fantastic sky so bright It would probably have been been better on a less sunny day with low light.
all 36 shots ame out like it.
Actuall I'm very pleased whith it.

Maybe you have your monitor set with the contrast, or brightness wrong?

Re: The things we do to get a photo

also not having a go - honest but the commonest cause of disagreement over vividness or otherwise of colours is how monitors are set up.

mine is colour balanced using the gretag macbeth system and i have to agree with andrew that the sky looks unaturally bright blue but if your monitor is set up differently or not colour balanced then it might well look completely different to you. to my mind this is more likely to be the cause rather than your camera.

edit: ahh wait a minuite - you say all 36 shots are like that , does that indicate that its a film camera ? if so thats probably why as a lot of film (particularly Fuji) comes out unnaturally saturated when shot in bright light.

apart from the blueness of the sky I agree that it is a good capture - you certainly did well to get it composed and sharply foccused as i would guess that it was moving pretty quickly

I have no doubt that your sons have great iT expertise but this wouldnt necessarily mean that their monitors are colour balanced either - colour management is really a graphic design and photographers thing and isnt that wide spread because high spec monitors and colour management spyders are not cheap. Also colour management is a complete pain because its not just a one off thing - it has to be done on a regular basis if it is to work properly (in my case every week)

Also with respect I would say that the critique by any of our familes is not going to be the most rigourous - the natural reaction when granny shows us one of her pictures is to say "ahhh thats lovely" , rather than "well the skys a bit oversaturated...."

If you want to send me the original file ie ideally as it came out of the camera then i will be happy to have a look at it for you - I will Pm you my email address.

Not film she has it on continuous shooting to be sure of getting at least one or two good shots on a moving object and her camera is a nikon

Its like Pete says there isn't actually anything wrong with your monitor but they see it on very expensive calibrated monitors which shows the truest colours ours which our cheapies dont
At least you are getting some advise so don't be sorry I told you to put it up.As Pete said you did really well to get such a good shot of such a high flying quick bird so give yourself a pat on the back.As long as you are pleased with it that is all that counts after all you are taking photos for your own pleasure as I do

Okay time out : I'm not having a go at you all I said it was a good capture but seems a bit unaturally blue

monitor wise colour balance isnt a question of the monitor not being set up "right" an unbalanced monitor will be fine for most home computing needs so it is not a question on anything that would be dealt with under warranty or indeed something an engineer could spot with the naked eye - i would guess that 99% of the moniotrs in the Uk are not colour balanced.

colour balance spiders such as the gretag macbeth work by having software running a chart on the screen while the stick on spider sits on the front of the screen and reads the chart adjusting it to the exact colour temperature.

The reason pros do this is to ensure that their images look the same on their monitor as they do on the one at the publisher , agency , client etc. They also profile printers in a similar way to make sure that what comes out of the printer is the
