| | | Re: Doggy Trends I personally don't see a problem with cross breeding, within reason, as cross breeds are healthier and most of the dogs around today are the result of cross breeding. I keep cavalier king charles spaniels and they have pug in there somewhere, as well as other dog breeds. With this in mind it seems a bit hypocritical of the kennel club to frown upon it. Obviously it would be dangerous to breed small females with large males and you'd have to be irresponsable to do it but with certain breeds there would be no problem. |

I'm referring to the use of the word " species" in these two paragraphs: "But what happens after the first generation of crossbreeds? Do puggles breed with puggles? Or does one breed back with a pug or a beagle? A cross breeding with another cross, warn geneticists, is liable to create "extremes of confirmation" - throwbacks to the original species. And that could lead to a puppy that is too large for a mother to safely give birth to.
"The truth is that we don't know what happens next," says Cumberland. "I personally don't think you can beat the first generation, and as a kennel, we're not going to venture past that point. It's just that first cross that is so much hardier, and healthier than the two species it comes from."
Pugs, beagles and all other breeds of dog are members of the same species Canis familiaris , the domestic dog (I'm not even sure they count as subspecies). If they were members of different species, they wouldn't be able to interbreed, or at least they wouldn't produce fertile young. That's a basic principle of biology.
Sloppy editing - I hate it. There's no excuse for it in this digital age, but it just gets worse and worse.

I'm not currently a dog-owner (present circumstances won't permit), but if I ever get another dog I wouldn't have a pedigree breed, I'd look for something like a Border Collie from working stock, with a bit of Alsatian or similar thrown in for genetic variety.
Fair comment about the risk of mating small females to larger males. I've had personal experience of this, and its traumatic consequences, but that's another story.

neil | Yes, I noticed that too. I was going to get annoyed about it (phrases like "Orwellian" and "Thought Police" sprang to mind) but on reflection, I think there's a less sinister explanation - something to do with Search Engines and the more sordid aspects of the Web - so I'm letting it pass. You live and learn.
Glad the original gave somebody a chuckle before its premature demise, that was the intention

| | | Re: Doggy Trends On the subject of pedigree or mongrel.. I have one of each, both rescue dogs.. the longhaired chihuahua is absolutly wonderful as is the jack russell cross. I have to say that as far as health concerns go.. the chichi is much more delicate. The JR is as robust as they come. The are both utterly gorgeous little animals.. but I am of course, biased

T2 | You put a risque comment up for a laugh, and it was considered inappropriate, so it got changed, no doubt by a moderator who has earnt such a position to call such shots. Orwellian and Thought Police does not come into it. | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
