| | | Late night wild life! It is 11.12pm...and a blackbird has just shouted a warning. I do sometimes hear a blackbird sing in the middle of the night. What is the latest you have heard a bird sing/call

| | | Re: Late night wild life! I heard a blackbird and a robin on Saturday night at about 3.30am as I meandered home but whether they were late or early for Sunday I wouldn't like to say... I was a little, umm, under the weather. I often hear pheasants up until about midnight when I'm out on newt surveys.
You can often hear birds screeching at this time in Gravesend town centre, the streets echo with calls of "Leave 'im Darren, 'ees not wurf it"

So did I - a mouthfull of Earl Grey all over my screen, nearly
I've heard a Nightingale giving it plenty until after midnight during the Summer months, but a blackbird at this time of year? He must be lost...

Anyway... In January I heard a tawny owl calling at 11.15am, does that count?

| | | Re: Late night wild life! Robins and blackbirds in particular will sing in spells throughout the whole night if they happen to be roosting near well lit roads! The extremely well lit road junction near the firestation can almost gaurantee both going at it - one on either side!
Lots of things but esp ducks and geese can be heard calling while flying over on migration.
Waders call through the night in the middle of the breeding season . . . I remember one lovely holiday 30 years ago in a cottage in the Cairngorms when curlew, oystercatcher and redshank called all night long . . . same goes for the short nights in the western isles - all the waders seem to be awake and going about normal business in the dark. It was out there that I first heard water rail song - they have a weird little trilly song quite the opposite of the 'pig screaming' normal 'rail-wail'! And apparently they only give this little song after dusk . . .
I live within spitting distance of Pennington Flash and whenever I go to the bathroom in the night I have a quick listen out of the open window: coot, moorhen and blackheaded gull always seem to be calling or fighting and the sound carries well after dark.
