Interested to hear about the left-handed banjo. I've often wondered why musical instruments are not made in left or right handed forms. You would think it wold make things easier for a lefty violinist &c. ... but apparently not. My younger sons, both musical, are both lefties but have never seen any reason to have left-handed instruments ... how come?
If it were I, I would demand a vicey-versa implememnt - but then, I've never been that good an instrumentalist - presumably I would just be looking for excuses! Quote:

Like Jenny, I have great difficulty with maps.
I've even got a left-handed five-string banjo! (Can't play it!) | |

Some models of electric guitar, for example, are available if you are prepared to pay the extra cost. I've never understood why guitarists find the need for these, as it is equally difficult with either hand when you pick one up for the first time. Further more, as far as I'm aware, there is no such thing as a 'left-handed' piano, with the lower register on the right and the higher register on the left, but I'm sure south-paws must play them.
As regards to which eye I use to look through a camera viewfinder: it's always been the left one. I never gave it any thought until now. I've always admired people who could use either hand with ease. I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

BTW there seems to be a lot of lefties on WAB.

I think so, I definately do it - and why not!
I'm astonished actually at the number of people I come accross in my job (who I stop to check I am where I thought I was....!) who can't seem to map read at all!! |

Jenny | Yes, this is preferred by some players, most famously by Jimi Hendrix. The drawback is that volume and tone controls are now in a more awkward position, and some designs restrict access to the upper frets. This, however, didn't seem to impede Hendrix.

| | | Re: Left Eye Dominant Mmmm. . . I use left eye for viewfinder - tho occassionally recheck with right as sight is clearer in right eye - but automatically its left eye first. . . I'm right-handed for eating and writing, left handed for waving? And both feet are equally useless - neither makes a competant first step!! Used to drink with either hand (and both would be needed after the first 6 pints!!) Afraid its just cups of tea and fruitjiuce now but the compensation is I'm not as bolshey!!! For all else I'm probably a right loon too!!

I need all the help I can get, Paul! I'm not at all musical, just determined, and don't like being left out!
I'm sure your sons are both musical enough to learn without the extra help!
I assume a banjolele is a cross between a banjo and a eukolele? Did you leave them in a cupboard together? I spend lots of time with people who can get a tune out of anything, and did a gig once (at Leeds Castle, dressed as a jester ) with someone who did the whole gig playing a mandolin, an borrowed instrument he had never played before, and he's left handed. (He also built himself a left-handed violin and taught himself to play it.)
And another where someone played an accordian in a key that didn't even include the notes he needed for the tunes he was playing, so I am humble, and grateful to be in such company!
