Re: How to bump up posts

i really dont see what the fuss is about - it is quite clear to me that kym etc are not deliberately bumping their post count , just having a laugh - and taking away from this would imo detract from the community spirit which makes wab special.

i'm all for closing threads which detract from the wab ethos or harm our image - this "how to bump posts" thread being a case in point but cant see how the add five words thread does that.

however that said , as ever i am happy to support whatever stu and our hard working moderation team decides.

Re: How to bump up posts

well it's a community site maybe we could set up a vote......
I quite like the thread makes me smile some clever words and it's good to see people have fun.
but I can see that it does constantly take up on of the 'most recent' list which would indeed block others off, could it not just be taken off that list? (or would that involve to much inkering?) then those who enjoy taking part and reading it could still find it in it's relevent forum but newer threads could make it onto the 'most recent' list?

Re: How to bump up posts

I am guilty of adding a great many posts to the 'add five words' thread. I've got bored with it now and stopped, but that is because I'm currently too depressed to find it funny. But I can't see why anyone should be offended by it? It is simply a game for those who maybe just want to say hello, whilst not having any great news to impart?
Who cares how many posts you've made? I talk a lot! Therefore I probably use more words than somebody who makes every word count in a more meaningful way. It's all down to personality.
I'm sorry if I talk rubbish on threads like that! I just do. We are a cross-section of society, who are all here because we love wild-life. That is the only thing that we are guaranteed to have in common.
None of us are or were trying to offend anyone. Stop the thread if you want to. It's not the only thing we do!

Well said BW!

I talk rubbish on here too, quite a lot of the time actually. But, that's me, I'm harmless enough.

If it were meant to be that serious it should have been called 'Deadly Scientifically Serious About Britain' or am I being too flippant

Badgerwatcher, I've never considered anything you say as rubbish. I think you seem a very kind and caring person To be able to have fun on WAB as well as tackle the important issues is all part of what makes WAB such a great site.

Re: How to bump up posts

I think this is something we arent all going to agree on. But then thats just like real life issues.. So even though i enjoy it and it makes me laugh I will also go with what ever the Mods decide

But on the point of bumping up Posts i will also limit how many hellos i reply to as this may also be seen as a way of us bumping up our Posts, which is a shame as I know how welcome i was made to feel when I joined WAB by other members in the HELLO Forum..

Re: How to bump up posts

For what its worth, as a relatively new member, I found the Hello Forum really useful as a gentle way in to WAB. How nice to have welcoming feedback so quickly.

Also, i think there should be room to confront major issues, share observations and also have fun. Each individual will have their own interests and contribute to differing types of thread accordingly.

Finally, does it matter? If we are in danger of filling up our area of hyperspace then I'm sure that admin will alert us.

Apart from getting off the starting block as a New Member, there does not seem much incentive to bump up posts. I did wonder what happens after, say, 10,000 posts (Emperor of the Dark empire??). To me, the idea of promotion is another part of the fun but does not encourage me to post for the sake of it.

To get back to the main point - The Five Words - its a challenge to make a contribution in such a limited way. I find it as good a way to unwind as Soduko or a crossword.

Re: How to bump up posts

Hmmm.....not really sure what to say here, but I love this site and learn a great deal from everyone.
Unfortunately I don't have the wide depth of knowledge to pass on or to be able to ID certain things for people , therefore if I want to join in and say something it is generally on the 'hello' page. The fact that you get posts for this is a by product but make them no less worthy surely.
I think what's nice about this site is that the people are friendly, there are lively debates which make interesting reading, and people genuinely care how other members may be feeling. I actually feel like I know some of you even though I have know idea what anyone looks like ( except Badgerwatcher -who I only know from her avatar and you look and sound like an extremely kind person ).
How about having a category for friendly banter where the posts don't count? (not excessive, just the fun element where people like me can join in). We are all here because we like the same thing...Wildlife...after all.
(Of course,then, I will never become a wild member....humph ... but I'll live I suppose ).
Anyway, whatever is decided the thing that sets this site apart from all the others is the vast amount of knowledge mixed in with the humourous side of life and the fact we are having this debate now ....not a bad combination in my opinion.

Oh and lol geoff...I didn't know that, not a lot of people do, apparently...fanks for letting us know

I stopped reading the thread after about the tenth post as they're very hard to moderate, and I even thought about running it to the 1,000 post milestone then closing it.

Maybe we should close it and start ones about bird/mammal/fish/weather facts? Each post could have a single 'quick fire' fact and it would be more relevant and of greater interest to all members?

It's been a bit of fun and certainly had plenty of views. But now the days are getting longer and brighter.... well occasionally I think we should consider closing it and start something new.

One thread I have thought about is "wildlife folklore". A subject where I'm sure everyone has something to contribute. As well as providing additional information on a subject I would imagine some contributions would be quite amusing.

So, the thread is now open for business ...... and I've started with:

Fungi used by Native Americans - Puffballs

next

Why micromanage? When the people contributing to the thread get bored with it it will just drop off the end of the page. Problem solved.

I don't even read the Five Words thread, but I don't see why the enjoyment of reading and posting should be taken away from those that do contribute.

I thought the whole purpose of the Treehouse was for off topic and humorous posts, but perhaps I have got it wrong again.

Re: How to bump up posts

i think gill had the best idea - just knock it off the recent posts list (assuming this is possible without making a lot of extra work for stu) - that way it wont be monopolising this list but those that enjoy it will still be able to find it through their user cps.

as an aside it also occurs to me that if anyone has an issue with such a thread or believes that another member is deliberately bumping their post count , rather than starting a thread about it , might it be a better idea to use the report posts button to draw it to the attention of the mods ?

Re: How to bump up posts

Quite right, Susie. There are so many useless or uninteresting threads (at least, not interesting to everybody ), where do you stop? Or start? I looked at the thread in question, saw it wasn't for me and have not been back .... but if it amuses someone, as it clearly does, just leave it to die a natural death .....
Cheers, Paul

You are right of course but some folk do see kudos behind a large count. You'd be surprised by the antics some have employed.

However I tend to agree that a thread dies its natural cause. I saw no harm in that thread. Its personal choice as to whether you view or contribute. I saw it as a bit of fun at first, but it did become a bit hat-stand.

Re: How to bump up posts

I started the Add Five Words thread, not with the intention of bumping my thread count, I couldnt give a flying fire engine what my count is. I didnt think anyone who contributed to it did so with that intention either.

It concerns me that someone has taken the time to read that thread only to find out how many posts where made by how many individuals. How sad!

I would like to point out that despite there only being a few contributors there is clearly sufficient interest in that silly little thread to take the viewing numbers up to nearly 5000.

In reading all the comments in this (How to bump threads) thread I had a range of emotions from astonishment to outrage. From the desire to laugh at the comments through to 'well if this is their attitude' via 'I shall ask for the thread to be withdrawn' but I decided not to allow a knee jerk reaction to make that decision.

As to the point of the thread hogging one of the top five postions on the Community Forum, surely you realise that you only have to click on the Forum headings and then the various areas to see all current postings.

It was meant as a lighthearted thread, and I am amazed it has gone on as long as it has. I really cant see the point of being upset about the original thread. Unless it was to provoke another 'arguement' on the forum.

Whatever the intent, it has been successful in that people will stop posting on the original thread, not because they will fear being accused of thread bumping but because their pleasure in something daft has been taken from them.

Garden Carpet.

Well, you've certainly made sure the fun has gone out of it. As one of those who has enjoyed contributing to what I thought was a harmless bit of fun, I can assure you I don't give a hoot how many posts I've got. I didn't realise it was a competition. But you've made your point and I guess the thread is killed.

Re: How to bump up posts

It honestly hadn't occurred to me that people said hello to people to 'bump their posts' up! I thought people were just being nice. I haven't been doing it lately because lots of people do it, and I reckon I get to know people eventually anyway.
I didn't even realise initially that that was what this thread was about. I thought it was about bumping up a thread, something I did before I knew what it was called on Bushcraft's save these two reserves thread, because I saw it as something I didn't want people to miss.
I am happy for the number of posts I have made to be unlisted and unrecorded. I don't give a monkey's. What difference does it make to anything? Put me down as tea-lady!
I don't normally get grumpy. Today, I'm treating myself.

As a rlatively new member, who has contributed to over 70 threads already, I find it slightly,
no very, insulting to be considered a post counter.Does the fact that a post is credited for every image uploaded also count as post counting.
I feel so strongly about this that i now ask a moderater to remove my complete input to the site and close my accoount

Good that you agree that it shouldn't matter about post counts and that if you don't like a thread don't read it but do you really have to be so rude about the poetry thread calling it tosh. That is an insult to the talented people that have had a go and they are on wildlife and the environment.I never thought i would see the day I read poetry but Beryl started me on it with her amusing poetry and she can also do straight stuff to which I have also managed to enjoy reading.I only wish I had some kind of talent.Even if I don't like something I would never be so insulting as to say something as unfriendly as tosh.It is unnecessary and rude
Keep the poetry coming peeps let us that like to enjoy it have the privilege to read it as long as it is based on subjects on the site I don't see any harm.

No no no don't go!!! It really is a tiny minority that occassionally pick on post counts and they're usually people who just choose not to contribute as much.... most of us just enjoy the site and its myriad threads. There's more than room for you and your excellent images don't go!!!
