| | | Waking up to wildlife I think its great how more and more people are waking up to the wonders of wildlife and discovering how fascinating they are. I have just been for a walk in my local woods and have noticed that the landowner has put up several nest boxes around the wood to help the nesting birds. He also leaves lots of dead wood standing and because of that you can find all three species of woodpecker in the wood . It is really great to realise that your local landowners care about the wildlife as it alows the number of species to grow in your local area . |

| | | Re: Waking up to wildlife It never ceases to amaze me, each time I come across a child that has no, or very little contact, with anything to do with wildlife.
So many are plonked in front of the telly, a computer game or watching a permanent round of dvd's, it's hardly surprising.
This is why think that it should be everyone's duty to pass on the delights of learning about natural history. It's such an excellent way of understanding about so many things in life and with luck, they'll grow up with the same love of nature that we have.
I think the best presents a child can be given are a pair of wellies, bucket and spade and the attention of an adult that loves the countryside.
Thank you Grandad.

| | | Re: Waking up to wildlife Since we dug the pond my son has been pond dipping. He has seen newts and newt tadpoles, which I had not seen before. Toad sporn not seen before. Dragonfly lavae. Frog sporn. Lots of aquatic insects and all the bird life a pond brings to your back garden. Every child should have a pond it brings hours of pleasure and education. But as always supervise young children around water. Mine are older. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
