| | | Table Top Washing Machines An off topic and hopefully non controversial question.
Back in the early 1970s my late parents bought a Table Top washing machine that you simply filled from the hop tap, loaded a few items in and cranked by hand for about ten minutes. Results were reasonable and it was very handy for light weight loads.
I would like to obtain one but can't find whether there are any currently on the market.
I wonder if anyone knows if they are still on sale, and if so where?

What sort of washing machines do people have? I worry about the electricity and water mine uses, but when I suggested we got a twin tub, it wasn't well received. I don't have time mostly to wash by hand. (My mother used to spend all Mondays washing, but she didn't go out to work. And she had a mangle, which I'd quite like one of. It was hard work though.

I have had a look on ebay, plenty of them there but they are all electrically powered, not a single hand cranked one anywhere. I wish I had not taken my mother's old Acme to the tip 30 years ago.

| | | Re: Table Top Washing Machines I'm pretty sure I've seen one recently in a magazine for the more mature citizens - Saga, Heyday, Choice, for starters - all of whom probably have websites you could try. Another possibility is those multi-shopping booklets which come through the post, or are inserted into newspapers (whatever, I'm sure they are still available). In fact, I've just remembered someone I know bought one for their caravan a couple of years ago!

| | | Re: Table Top Washing Machines Excellent. And when you have finished the washing you can churn butter in it.
We used to have a "gas washer" when I was a child, as our first house didn't have electricity when my parents moved into it. You used a gas ring at the bottom to heat the water up then heaved back and forth on a manual paddle to swish the washing about. Then put it though a hand operated mangle. It seemed like good fun to me, but I suspect my mum wasn't as thrilled! She certainly got an electric one as soon as she could. That had a mangle too, which was electrically operated and would almost certainly be condemned by the health and safety mob now. It was supposed to stop if you got your fingers trapped - mercifully I never had to find out if it worked. |

| | | Re: Table Top Washing Machines I can remember the first washing machine I ever saw it was called
The hotpoint Empress it had a conical vertical paddle that oscillated
and most fascinating a power wringer!!
Sheets that went through it came out just like planks, you just fed
a corner in with your finger and thumb (HSE!) and zonk a totally dry
almost dessicated sheet(shirt buttons stood no chance)

It was ok unless you had something really messed up then I would boil it a bit first and / or cover it in vanish first. Yes it certainly helped as a work out - I was much fitter at uni |

jaki | I remember my mother doing the washing with one of those and my father helping by cranking the mangle. Only trouble was if you were mangling say a pillow case, you might trap a lot of water at the end, which was OK if you cranked slowly, but if you cranked fast, the water sprayed everywhere! My mother used to have to tell him to stop time after time, but water still sprayed all over the place! My father wouldn't have done it deliberately, would he? Would he?
