I grow chillies,Tomatoes, flowers, ect, all from seeds and all in multi purpose compost. Then when the weather took a turn for the worst I coverd my gunera with used compost to keep it warm and protect it thorough the worst of the weather. I also use used compost as a multch on the garden as we live in a heavey clay area to add nutrients back into the soil and to help break up the clay. |

| | | Re: Compost ok...... I'm lost here I'm guessing it's one of those 'had to be there' moments?
However, it does give me the perfect platform to pass on my latest great find. I was listening to gardener's question Time on't radio last wednesday and Bunny Griffiths mentioned that one of her best finds of last year (Ithink it was) was spent mushroom compost and what a great find it was costing her only £2 a tonne.
So I googled this and found some locally, peat free of course and organic and they sterilize it so it's got no weed seeds or slug eggs in it you collect it your self and it's a £1 a bag (regardless of the size of the bag)!! YEY my chillis will be even cheaper this year!!!!!
Just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone else fancies a go!! |

I'm quite excited about this years growing season - I shall be digging a new bed too but have to wait as have to fix the fence first .......... (darn gale force winds) |

| | | Re: Compost well it's a good idea but it's only a small garden and the fence panels are fine I just need new posts (and my man to help me fix it ) . A dry stone wall at my folks place would be brilliant - I'm thinking of adopting their garden and bunging in a load of nest boxes and bat boxes.... My parents built their house in a field and it's been fascinating watching it recover from being a fertilised hay field Dad's never feritlized it and after 30 years the wildflowers are coming back and as the substrate is limstone there's a calcareous nature to some of the species. I find it quite exciting now it seems to change for the better every year, for example year before last was the first time I've seen a Common Blue Butterfly and last year there were three!! Brilliant!! Last year I am tempted to help things along by planting particular plants - but I'm actually really interested to see what turns up by itself........... | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
