My kids usually take one on school trips. They have always had some pictures back, the big problem is getting the kids to understand the fixed focal distance and the need to stand at least 6' away from their subject.
The alternative to carrying your Mega SLR & kit is obviously a neat compact.
My avatar was taken with a compact (and a little help from my 'scope)

To be truthful in the context of what can be done with a SLR or compact with a lcd screen they are very limited, for wildlife photography they are a "No, No".

Did you hear about the bloke who went into his local hardware shop?
He picked up a tin of insect spray and asked the shopkeeper,
"Is this any good for Flies?
The shopkeeper replied.
"No Mate, it kills them"
