| | | Good Name Needed I am struggling a bit now, and getting a bit panicky.
I'm about to become a dad (3 weeks!) and despite having had plenty of time to think about it, we can't come up with a good name. One thing we both like the idea of is if the name comes from a vaguely natural world type of background. Obvious ones and reasons we can't use them: Hazel (mum in law) Iris (granny), Poppy (Jamie Oliver ) and so on. Ivy is quite good, but we're not sure coz the Ivy took the rendering of the back of the house last year and cost us a fortune.
Has anyone got any good ideas of names that we could use? It doesn't have to be a plant (eg Vanessa from butterflies). It will have my last name which is Rufus, and I thought maybe using a latin name such as Lynx Rufus (Bob-cat) or Selasphorus Rufus (Rufous Hummingbird) would be funny, but I got told off for that.
We don't know if its a boy or girl, so anything will help. Sorry for being so pathetic, but I've never had such a big responsibility in my life before!
Thanks for any help.
Sven

or penelope (wigeon) Prunella (dunnock) both of which can be shortened to pretty names ? |

| | | Re: Good Name Needed If it makes you feel better, we were still arguing about names several hours after our first child was born! We decided that it would be best to give him 2 names, so that if he did not like the first, he could use the second. We also thought that a name that could be shortened would give even more options for him to choose his own name. It is a pity to lumber a child with a name that he/she really hates.
Anyway, I can think of some lovely girls names with a natural theme, but not many decent boys names. Rose seems to some out top in the suggestions already made but I love Lily, Holly, Marguerite and Daisy. How about Jay for a boy?
Hope all goes well with the birth.

Remember that it will be your child, and that the child will have to live with the name for the rest of it's life.
Good luck, old son.

| | | Re: Good Name Needed I've always found it easier to think of female names than male. All the way through my pregnancy I came up with loads of girl's names, then out popped my son!
For a girl how about:
Willow, Summer, Rosie, Daisy, Poppy, Heather, Erica, Honey (or even honeysuckle!), Rowan (can go for a boy as well), Tamarisk, Lily, Primrose, Fern, Jasmine, Amber, Sky, Star, Storm. |

| | | Re: Good Name Needed What a great thread. A name can be key to success.
If I had a lad he would be called Mollison (my Dads Mums maiden name) Peregrine Hunter. I also like the middle names of Shaft, Convolvulus, Pug and Snout
and a girl would be called Tawny Swift Hunter with the middle name maybe of Lily
Now I just have to find a lovely lady that agrees to the names and requires a rather dashing bloke to dream with. |

This is a good thread - I looked up my first and middle name on Garden Carpets link:
DIANA
Probably derived from an old Indo-European root meaning "heavenly, divine", related to dyeus (see ZEUS). Diana was a Roman goddess of the moon, hunting, forests, and childbirth, often identified with the Greek goddess Artemis. Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales, was a famous bearer of this name.
JENNIFER
From a Cornish form of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar (see GUINEVERE). This name has been popular only since the beginning of the 20th century, when it was featured in George Bernard Shaw's play 'The Doctor's Dilemma'.
( Jennywren )
Best wishes to both of you and good luck!
Jennywrenny

| | | Re: Good Name Needed Doesn't really matter - they'll want to change it when they grow up!
I've always gone for the simple names (for boys, monosyllables - John, Paul ....) on the basis that they can't be shortened .... We foresaw that our sons Peter and David might end up (being born in the east end of London) with their names shortened (didn't happen in fact) but thought they might make a singalong group 'Pete n Dave'.
No basically, you might as well call them 1,2,3 .... but hope you don't go too far ... they'll end up using totally different names,
Cheers, Boris |

| | | Re: Good Name Needed Interestingly ( ) I had a drink from the fountain (just north of Nauplion/Nafplia) in Greece, a couple of years back where Hera (the original, Greek 'Diana') used to bathe each year to renew her virginity. Well, it was quite tasty water but I can't say that I noticed any effect on my physiology .....

| | | Re: Good Name Needed I suspect that some parents know what they're doing in relation to their surnames. Thus Mr & Mrs Cart could foresee the jollity of calling their son Orson. I've known more than one Ms Green whose parents named her Theresa ... and there are worse things! Quote:

Think they must have been 'good' holidays!
Should have named mine Kent, Kent and Cornwall.

| | | Re: Good Name Needed Excellent, some great ideas out there, thanks a lot for them all - don't stop, still plenty of time! I did for a while consider selling the naming rights on Ebay, but this is a more productive way of using modern technology to resolve the issue.
Thanks to Garden Carpet for Eirlys - not sure how to pronounce it, but it looks like a good name. My partners mum has welsh background so it would make sense as well in a way. Also we had wondered about some celtic/gaelic names - does anyone know other names from such those languages that have the nature connection?
As for the idea to keep it simple - nah! I had to bear the burden of 'Sven' all the way through childhood - it's pay back time! I know they'll hate it, but as that's a given anyway, we might as well be a little adventurous. Don't want it to be one of 5 Chris's in its class like I had.
It does seem that all the good names like this are for girls, wonder why that is?
Anyway, keep them coming. Thanks for your help.
