Thanks to Garden Carpet for Eirlys - not sure how to pronounce it, but it looks like a good name. My partners mum has welsh background so it would make sense as well in a way. Also we had wondered about some celtic/gaelic names - does anyone know other names from such those languages that have the nature connection?
As for the idea to keep it simple - nah! I had to bear the burden of 'Sven' all the way through childhood - it's pay back time! I know they'll hate it, but as that's a given anyway, we might as well be a little adventurous. Don't want it to be one of 5 Chris's in its class like I had.
It does seem that all the good names like this are for girls, wonder why that is?
Anyway, keep them coming. Thanks for your help. |
Welsh girls I have known.
Eiddwen. (snowdrop?) Heulwen (sunshine) . Eiryth ('Skylark'?)....
But why not one of the welsh river names? (boys or girls)
Lliedi, Teifi, Dyfi, Dee, Nedd, Dafen, Tywi, Gwendraeth, Dulais, ... all beautiful. Just pick one off the map.
By the way, googling 'welsh names' is a disappointing experience. |

Glad you liked Eirlys.. she is a good pal... and it is said as if you were saying Alist.... but leaving off the tee. Ayliss . My neice is called Eilidh (aylea) which is gaelic for light... and as my mother says.. she is the shineyest baby around!

Ceinwyn - not sure of the meaning but its a pretty name
( ive been reading the bernard cornwell king arthur books so Ill stay off boys names unless you fancy Derfel , Lancelot , Mordred, Cuneglas etc )

I have been inspired by some of the lovely celtic names, ones that mean something that in English is not a name but a good plant or whatever, and I am going to see if I can find an online dictionary to look up my favourite species and see what they are called in welsh etc.
Thanks again for all the suggestions - I'm glad you all have taken this one on. And don't stop posting if you think of any more. Am I expected to give a prize to the winning entry?
I will of course provide an update once the name is chosen, although I suspect that this sort of name might only be used if it is a girl. Why are boys names so much harder?
Cheers
Sven

My thoughts this time are:
Rainbow for a girl - you could always shorten it to Bo as well
Saige or Sage (means wise and healthy ) - this could be either a boys or girls name
A PRIZE????......... ........What a good idea Sven! ......How thoughtful !! |

jaki | No sign of the little oooooo just yet. Teresa is getting quite bored now - I'm torn, get it over and done with, or enjoy a few more good nights sleep, tough call.
We have found out that it is a girl - 98% likelihood anyway. As for choosing the name, not really made much progress. You know how if you say a word too often, (try saying 'butter' 20 times) it sort of disassociates itself from its context and meaning - it has got a bit like that with all the names that we talk about.
I'm not convinced that when you see them the name suggests itself - they all look the same at first, a bit squished up and red and blotchy!
We'll see - will keep you posted, thanks for the interest.

| I'm with Badgerwatcher on this one, wait until the baby turns up and I will be very surprised if a name doesn't just fall into place.
I had a friend who thought the same as you, but when her baby was born she has the most flawless pale skin and so she dumped the name they had planned and called her Jennifer - because it means white.
You could do worse than name her Susie Susan means lily.
Mind you, people don't call their children Susan anymore, it is an old fashioned name now!
Anyway, my thoughts are with your good lady - the last few weeks are never fun - and I wish you all much happiness.
I call my children:- one, two and three. It works a treat! |

Meet Ivy Ivy Rufus
Late, but worth the wait. An incredibly emotional day (or three). I'm tired and going to bed now, but wanted to look at the pictures I took before I go, and thought I'd share this with you.
We went for the name Ivy in the end which I had mentioned in the post that started this thread, and that after all the good ideas that the rest of you came up with. Thing is that the name has been knocking around our thoughts for such a long time it began to seem right. So there it is.
I'm delighted to say that all involved are well, albeit a little ragged around the edges. I'm so proud of Teresa who has put up with so much over the past 9 months and a difficult birth.
Can't wait to bring them home in a couple of days. Meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy a sleep filled night while I can.
Thanks to everyone who has shown an interest in this, and sent us their thoughts.
I'm going to stick more pictures on that page later, so if you're really interested, stay tuned.
Cheers
Sven
