Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

I came back earlier today to find one of those nasty blue screens which said something about dumping physical memory.

I turned the computer off and now it does not want to seem to start with the final screen saying

STOP: C0000218 UNKNOWN HARD ERROR

Any ideas?

I am on my laptop now by the way.

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

Hi.

I searched for "C0000218 UNKNOWN HARD ERROR" in google and had many results, mostly results for people with the same problem and it seems to be registry related. Have you changed any hardware recently? Also what operating system are you using?

Don't ask me what this means but there must be something you could try on this link.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

A further thing worth trying if you have more than one hard drive installed is to disconnect all bar the boot drive and see if it then boots up ..... this has got me out of trouble more than once with XP.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

Thanks but all of this is a bit above my head. I think I will call the company who made it tomorrow.

Cheers

Everytime XP crashes I think about that wonderful bloke in PC Mart who keeps telling people that XP is a much more stable operating system .... would like to meet him some dark night (just so long as he he not bigger and faster than me!). Bring back Windows 3.11!

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

I will refrain from smashing this computer up, as I did with my last one, and wait 24 hours.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

That's a good idea!

I read around the threads of other people with the same problem and it doesn't seem to be an easy problem to fix so best leave it to the experts.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

Whenever you buy a new PC or laptop as you go through the setting up proccess it usualy asks you to make a boot disc just for this problem.
When this used to happeden to me I hoped that I had backed everything up and reloaded Windows.

In keeping with the photography forum, Boddie (Nikon v Canon), get a Mac. I switched from the Kingdom of Gates last year, and will never switch back.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

Will it boot from your XP Disc? Try it first. It may be the boot info is corrupt, that can be fixed easily. If it won't boot from the XP disc, and can't id the hard drive, it's down to hardware and a warranty job.

Re: Computer Problems - Anyone Help?

XP has a facility called system restore. This restores your pc to a time before it went wrong. I think it is under accessories in programmes. Try that.

Yikes, Andrew! There is a way of re-installing XP without losing anything..No good for you now, but if it happens in future, just ask. It re-installs all of the XP core, whilst leaving alone all user settings and programs.
It shouldn't happen at all, it sounds as though somethings going wrong with the standby or hibernate mode, if either of these were active.

No problem. It's quite easy to do, if you've got the orginal XP disc, which you've obviously got.
