The CEH (Centre for Ecology & Hydrology) is being shut down, signalling a massive loss of ecological research in the UK.

To spend £45m to save £1.2m a year is the economics of the madhouse.
Mr Juniper said Friends of the Earth would be seeking an early meeting with government ministers. "New Labour's environmental credentials are already in tatters," he said. "If these proposals go ahead, it will confirm to many people that ministers really have no environmental interests whatsoever."

A typical Government reaction, they promote the benefit of wildlife and the environment but will not support it. I'm at a total loss to understand how spending 45m will save money. These research centers have and do actively contribute to our knowledge and understanding.

WHY waste 200 people contributing to our lives and environment, get rid of 15 un-needed, overpaid, useless hospital managers (and the rest of them for that matter) and save well over the required £1.2m.

We must defend our countryside and wildlife,their next target could well be
the indiginous people of this country.

Well most of us should be safe as we are desended from the peoples who have invaded us since prehistory. I have doubts whether there are any truly indiginous people left in these islands.

I'm almost completely speechless. £1.2m, is that it? Surely this must be a typo. There are probably govt departments that spend more on tea and biscuits.

This a very sad day for British wildlife and the environment.

£1.2 million in this case, but considering the swingeing job cuts in other scientific institutions recently (the closure of Long Ashton, Silsoe and other research centres & relatively large scale reduncancies at Rothamsted Research & the CSL for example) I think the funding problem goes very deep.
