| | | Re: Webcam Check please and is it terribly expensive. I have an oft visited feeder in my front garden, but as I spend a lot of time sitting here I cant see them feeding. I wondered about a camera from the house wall viewing the feeder about 5ft away. Would that be possible? Or would it have to be nearer?

Originally Posted by lol geoff Without getting too technical Kev what sort of equipment do you need for a project like that? | The pan/tilt camera is a Panasonic BL-C30 wireless network camera and the day/night camera is an Axis 221 fitted with a 5-50mm zoom lens. Both cameras have built in web servers that handles all the images sent out.
The panasonic camera is housed in a modified sandwich box to keep it dry and is positioned about 18 inches from the ground feeding trays. Camera cost is about £200 but a static wireless camera could be bought from about £50.
The Axis camera is a professional system and cost over £800 with the zoom lens and that camera is positioned in the kitchen window sill at a range of about 20' to the hanging feeders. Because it isn't wireless I've added a Netgear game adaptor to the back of it to convert the camera to wireless. The night lighting is a pair of IR LED illuminators.
Both camera feed into my wireless network and then out onto the internet.
If you seriously want to set up a camera just ask and I'll give you all the help you need. Bottom line, it will cost around £75-100 to set up a basic camera IF you have a wireless network add another £50 if you dont have wireless |

| | | Re: Webcam Check please Just had a little go. Saw a chaffinch tucking in. Amazing to be able to control a camera from here in Kent that's in Anglesey! Cheers Kev.
Off to do my survey now.

| | | Re: Webcam Check please Thanks for the info Kev. I am really just inquisitive about the kit that's needed for such a set up, it sounds relatively inexpensive and simple to achieve something so facinating. I might have a go one day. I've often thought about a camera set up to record the visitors to my garden when I'm not there, how hard would it be to rig up a camera with some sort of PIR device for switching the camera on when there's something to see? |

Most of the network cameras were designed for security systems so motion detection is built into them Turn it on and it will record to a hard drive everytime something comes in the field of view.
Both of my cameras have motion detection active and stream images to a network server I have on the network. When I get home I can browse through a days camera activity in 5 minutes just like fast forwarding a video |
