I'm desperately missing....

Dragonflies and damselflies, any insects, siskins, the sun and any half decent photo opportunities of any wildlife.

Re: I'm desperately missing....

the sun, definitely the sun!

I'm already looking forward to the insects appearing in April/May but it would be nice to enjoy the winter wildlife in some sunlight. In fact, at the moment I'd just settle for some dry weather, it doesn't seem to have stopped raining for several days and the forecast looks terrible for the next few days

Re: I'm desperately missing....

Oh yes, the sun, please. I hate these grey, drizzly winters in this flat landscape under the huge grey dome of an East Anglian sky. Winter should be cold, crisp and sunny, like it always was in my childhood in the north east (yes, I know, of course it wasn't ). I don't mind the seasonal variations in the wildlife - makes for interest and anticipation.

It poured all day yesterday and even though it isn't raining (yet) today it's grey, grey, grey.

Think I'd better go and have a cup of tea and cheer myself up. Then if it doesn't rain I'll clean my car, which is growing moss in the window seals in this damp weather

Re: I'm desperately missing....

At this time of year, I only have the weekends to experiment with my camera. It looks like this weekend is going to be a complete write-off.

Roll on spring/summer when I can get out in the evenings.

BTW my husband saw a muntjac with a tiny baby on our driveway lit up by his headlights the other night. No photo opportunities!

Re: I'm desperately missing....

I was intending to have a week in Norfolk last week but gave up after three days because of the conditions.

I have tried to brave the elements since to get photos but I must admit that a bit of sun wouldn't go amiss. Cold, crisp days is what is needed just now. Surely we must get some soon but I bet when we do it will be mid-week only, which is when I am at work.

Re: I'm desperately missing....

I came across a very sheltered bit of country lane, south
facing high banks lots of insects as it was suprisingly
warm(tee-shirt) Shangri-la is out there somewhere
Sol only has to peep out to excite everything

Cold crisp days are the best but I'm afraid the weather forecast doesn't seem to be offering any possibility of those for the next week ahead.

But how grateful is the thirsty earth! And all the birds are out there, their colours paintbox sharp in the overcast gloom. And the greens of the conifers take on a rich quality against the seal grey sky as they ruffle like a Van Gogh painting!

We have a poet among us. Beautifully put. Tis true, just wish I could capture it photographically but I'm not that good... yet

The sun it's dank and miserable here. Also missing those cold bright and frosty mornings that we should be getting this time of the year.

I am watching gulls circling against a blue black sky and your words echo the view

Lol! You need headphones, Dan. No music, just headphones! An old trick I learned in hospital!

One look at that grin on his public profile, and you can see exactly what his poor old mum has to put up with, can't you?

Swallows, Swifts and the smell of newly mawn grass. I hate these long grey days - I normally follow the Swallows to Africa at this time of year, on holiday, but can't this year. Still, the Daffodils are beginning to show through.

Re: I'm desperately missing....

I love any sort of weather, remember you have to look at the whole picture - everything contributes something, we may not see it, but it's not complete without it. (even wet grey days).

Re: I'm desperately missing....

I don't mind it being winter but let's have some sunny and frosty/snowy days not this endless greyness and wetness.

If we are not going to have a proper winter let's move on swiftly to April and May with the return of the summer birds and some butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.

I've almost forgotten how to use my camera ....

Richard

What about you?
This time of year can be tedious insect wise, but I don't really mind, I am just counting off the weeks 6 weeks time it will be mid february and the first signs of life may be about. 8 weeks time and it will be the end of the first week in March and providing conditions are mild and there is some sunshine there is a good chance that something will be about maybe a Brimstone or a Small Tortoiseshell. Go forward another week and it is mid march and something else might be about and from that point on so long as there is some sunshine and the weather is mild you will start to see more and more insects.
