| | | The Night Before New Year Nights in the quiet suburbs in England are just that - quiet. With the window ajar there was little to hear but the wind blowing and the BarkBark of the neighbourhood Fox on patrol. At the beginning of Autumn he used to bark in threes but he seems to have dropped one with the onset of Winter. We never see him. We leave him a bowl of food each night and he leaves us a scented calling card most mornings. Eau de Vulpes - a scent I find quite pleasant and oddly exciting.
The trees in our garden allow us the luxury of not being overlooked by any of the neighbours so we rarely put up curtains. I didn't sleep much last night. The bright spotlight of the moon shone right into our room. I watched it for a while. It seemed determined not to be ignored. Each time I moved a little out of its gaze to try to get to sleep again it drifted back to shine enquiringly directly in my face. Yes, yes, you're beautiful and its lovely to see you but can I get some sleep now please, I squirmed.
A grey dawn, a pair of Magpies getting lovey dovey in the Poplar and a new day begins. So, this is the last day of 2006. For all our resolutions (or not as the case may be) nothing much changes when a new year officially begins but its a good time to reach out to friends and offer warm wishes for the year ahead. So I wish you all a very Happy New Year and what ever you choose to do tonight, a hangover free Jan 1st |

| | | Re: The Night Before New Year Lovely observations Owl-Light and sometimes the obvious escapes our notice. We've just been for a short walk and found it to be pleasantly mild - sun shining occasionally through cloud and a slight breeze blowing the washing dry. The frost caught some of my plants in our absence down in Cornwall (which was pretty murky and damp) last week, and on my return home I'm happy for this warmer climate to continue, for a while at least.
Thanks for your best wishes and here's to a healthy and happy New Year for all of our members and visitors.

I've just been for squelch round the local common (torrential rain yesterday) where a lot of work has been put into taking out the more encroaching undergrowth to free up the paths. There are now lots of useful piles of branches and twigs for the creepies. The wind was a bit bracing, but the air was alive with bird calls and we saw lots of the residents, plus a sparrowhawk and one of Letchworth's increasingly rare "black" squirrels (camera? of course not!). Then came back for some of my husband's hearty soup.
I'm now at peace with the world.
Happy new year, everyone. |

| | | Re: The Night Before New Year Happy Birthday, Jaki! Mine's next Sunday. It's a lovely time of year for a birthday, isn't it?
And what an amazingly beautiful day for the first day of 2007! Sunny, fluffy white clouds, birds singing, everyone, including us, out enjoying Kent's glorious countryside. We are so lucky to live in England!
And tonight, as I came back from the dog walk, the moon appears nearly full. Like you, Owl-light, I don't pull the curtains, a new luxury for me, and I so love watching the changing sky at night, and the birds welcoming the dawn in the ash tree outside our bedroom window.

Happy Birthday in advance Badgerwatcher
I wonder how many other peeps on WAB don't bother with bedroom curtains either? I'm told its bad Feng Shui but what the hey, I love it.
We only put a window cover up when the weather gets dreadful, which for me is high winds. Not keen on that and watching my trees flapping around like elastic bands in the night makes me too nervous to sleep. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
