aston rowant sunset

boddie and myself went for a stroll round aston rowant / shirburn in the chilterns yesterday. If you get one d days weather you may as well get out there and do summat with it. I've just finished downloading my pics and reckon this is the days best

it is as taken except that i have darkened it in levels in pse5 which has brought out the colours in the sky

Both great shots, both work in their own way. I like the black and white wider moodier version, I also think Pete's closer style does the business just as well. What's that bright thing in the background.. Not seen anything like it for ages!

Re: aston rowant sunset

Another time to visit Aston Rowant is around Mid-Summer's Night, reputedly one of the best Glowworm sites in the UK.

Re: aston rowant sunset

Black silhouetted trees against a sunset or sunrise always look good to me .... well done eeyore.

I am not sure about glow worms but this is certainly one of the best areas for Red Kites in England.

Note. The site at Aston Rowant has been studied for some years. There are glow worms to be found all over the Aston Rowant reserve, but particularly on Beacon Hill, despite its proximity to the M40. This is a very important site, since any future streetlighting along the M40 could affect the colony. Beacon Hill is quite a large area, but it would be worth keeping a record of numbers seen, and also in the surrounding area. One female was reported in 1990 near Hill Farm, but normally this area does not have glow worms. About eight larvae were reported by John Tyler from the track at the bottom of Beacon Hill, beneath the
trees, in April 1992, and this is where larvae are often seen. I visit the site myself when I can, but the more accurate records the better.

It appears that numbers of glow worms on the scarp slope of Beacon Hill have declined considerably since the early 1990s. On one memorable night in 1994 I saw about 250 on this hillside alone, though the next night there was a cold snap and the number declined to eight, though subsequent years were up around the 60s and 70s. In 1999 and 2000 I have seen only a handful on the scarp itself, though it’s quite possible that I missed the peak nights.

Lucky you! .... I rarely see anything on the way to work other than traffic jams.

However, I do try and get over to the Chilterns at least once a year to see the Red Kites.

aston rowant is also a great site for orchids and flutterbys in the spring - i will probably be organising a wab meet here when we get towards orchid time
