| | | Thorns and prickles Hi peeps. Just come in from a day volunteering on a local reserve. Trouble is I've brought back about half a dozen thorns and prickles embedded in my hands and one somewhere I'd rather not discuss. Anyone got the -How to get thorns out without pain book handy. And yes, I did where gloves but brambles, hawthorns and roses just won't give up.
Julie ouch ouch

| | | Re: Thorns and prickles You need to get a bottle of your favourite alcoholic drink, drink it & then get your bloke to dig them out.
Or you could wait for them to come out on their own. |

| | | Re: Thorns and prickles A very sharp fine needle and the other half weilding it should remove them Julie, or as Deer Stalker said you could just leave them. They usually start to fester within a couple of days and work there way to the surface on there own. I prefer the digging them out way though, less painfull in the long run.

| | | Re: Thorns and prickles Yes, I agree - in most cases best to wait for them to come out on their own ... except that they tend to be on the tip of your index finger or some part of the anatomy that's constantly under pressure. If you do want to dig them out then do it after a bath or at least washing the appropriate part in warm water .... |

| | | Re: Thorns and prickles Hawthorn or is it blackthorn? are buggers and go septic. I spent most of the summer dealing with them in my arms and hands.
I also have so many white scars on my forearms im beginning to look like a "self harmer"....so much for being a volunteer and doing my bit to help i now do my bit to scare people off thinking im a nutcase?
Incidentally....you all know that technically a rose has "prickles" and not thorns at all !!
Makes all those songs worthless really. "Every Rose has its prickle?"

Dan | I heard Blackthorn has a type of fungus on its thorns & thats why the scratches go septic.
Gorse clearance is a nightmare. You get small puncture marks up your arms & legs even through your clothes. People see your arms & think your a Herion junkie.
& don't it sting when you get in the bath or shower after a conservation task? |

I had one at school.

Thorns..ouch, doggy had one right through his ear the other day. | Tetanus you should have a booster every 5-8 years, especially if you get punctured on a regular basis

Indeed, if you get lockjaw, you probably wouldn't be able to sue me, just smile in a grim manner!
There are lots of other infections that you can get seriously from any cut or abrasion, particularly the necrotyzing Streptococcus that has killed recently. So if you get festering infections which spread rapidly then get yourself to medical attention immediately!
On that cheery note, goodnight ... |

Derives from the fact that the jaw (and other bones) are gripped into place by muscular spasm. Sufferers are then said to have risus sardonicus

Bustles out again, tutting!

i'm not an expert either but i know a girl whos a practice nurse and thats what she tells me
