Explains the roots and leaves etc that were once used as food and medication years and years ago. You would be surprised what you can do with the lowly Dandelion root. When baked in the oven and crushed, it is claimed to make a first class coffee (de-caff of course!).
I would agree that Ray Mears always sets a very responsible approach to bush and woodcraft. I just wish that I had a fraction of his skills and knowledge. |

I just wish that I had a fraction of his skills and knowledge. | I used to live in the Channel Islands, which were occupied during WWll (no.. i wasnt there during that time ) There were obviously food shortages and dandilion coffee and acorn coffee were made during that time. I dont know about the first class bit. More a case of needs must. I understand it had a quite bitter taste and was a neccessity rather than a pleasure. I have had seaweed soup..ingredients gathered by my own hand. It was ok.. not something i would rush to eat again tho.

| | | Re: Ray Mears Wild Food Ok, maybe I am being a bit optimistic in saying that roasted dandelion roots make firstclass coffee subsitute but I have tried it and it is passable - just. I guess that makes a slightly more palatable choice then contemplating eating earthworms during survival training years ago!
But, from a botanist point of view, it is interesting to understand how we once used plants and, indeed, how many of our flora came to be named. I have a feeling that this program will kinder an interest (if only briefly) in traditional plants that were once used for cooking.
I understand that Ray Mears will even try to persuade some of today's top chefs to cook meals using old recipes. Should make for some interesting body language when it comes to the tasting! |

Some really interesting facts and ideas even though his stuttering sidekick made it difficult viewing i likes his new love of limpets ( until he had to eat them)
But...i spent the whole show admiring rays outdoors gear
I have not been able to find anything similar to what he wears...it has a distinct tied in at the waist look....along with his colour matched beanie and his colour matched wellies...im wondering if the stuff he wears is off the shelf or he has a stylist....or stuff made especially for him?
I did notice in one shot a name or label on the front of his khaki colour wellies but couldnt make it out?
Any ideas on a maker of his jacket? and boots?

Didn't think much of last weeks, doesn't interest me to find out what the Abo's eat, and got fed up fairly quickly, but this week was much more of what i expected the series to be |

Richard Mabey's Food for Free is probably best known + I think still available.
There was a large format Wild Food by Phillips on Pan Books.
Haven't seen last night's programme yet, but have taped it, for later consumption!! |

As mentioned before there is a good book called Wildfood by Roger Phillips, I have it and it is well illustrated and informative with lots of recipes.

| | | Re: Ray Mears Wild Food I hope the wellies are on his website too - I'm in the market for a good pair and they looked excellent. Like Dan, I was straining to read the label.
I rather like the "stuttering sidekick" he is working with. He is certainly not a natural TV personality, but he is an international expert on the subject, and a lot of the technical stuff about food values, etc, that Ray Mears was telling us comes from what he has learned from the other guy, whose name I've forgotten. Can't blame him for not being that keen on eating limpets. His description of them as a fairly tasty eraser was just about right. They really are squeakily rubbery. I've not eaten them since I was a child and don't particularly want to repeat the experience . |

| | | Re: Ray Mears Wild Food Oh, yes, I've got the other books. I always buy that sort of thing, and the John Seymour ones, and nuclear survival handbook, etc. Come the end of the world, I'm ready! I love reading them, but last night's focussed particularly on the coasts which I found very interesting.
I thought the sea buckthorn berry drink looked revolting! Practically 'dayglo!'
And, at risk of mockery, I have had my hunter wellingtons for years, and they are so light, I hardly know I'm wearing them. I wouldn't buy any other make. They are a bit 'horse and hounds!'

Oh well, since I'm buying my own it will have to be a less luxurious alternative, I fear. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
