| | | Phew! Scary numbers. Just read a line from Planet Earth-the future.BBC Books.
A quote from Robert May in the book,'In the lifetime of somebody over the age of 60 or 70, human population has trebled.'
My goodness. That's hard to head your head around isn't it!

| | | Re: Phew! Scary numbers. Yes, pretty scary..there are too many of us for the planet to sustain really, in the way we live at least. In Britain I think we have an ageing population; people living longer due to medicine. There aren't as many babies being born here as there have been in the past. We are also seeing the relocation/ immigration and emigration of more people which obviously changes populations of individual countries.I wonder if things like prermature death due to obesity and other reasons may even things out?! I suppose natural disasters and war can have varying degrees of impact.

| | | Re: Phew! Scary numbers. population growth is a bit scary. World population only reached 1 billion around 1840 and it took until around 1940 to reach 2 billion. Since then we hit 4 billion in the 1970s, 5 billion in the 1980s and 6 billion in the late 1990s.
It's mildly reassuring to at least know that the rate of growth is now falling, but estimates of the level at which the global population will reach a maximum are in the range of 11-13 billion. Virtually all future growth is predicted to occur in the developing world.
Sorry to sound like a textbook, but I teach this stuff

I have very little optimism when it comes to climate change. Our paltry efforts to control CO2 in the developed world really are a drop in the ocean given the massive growth in fossil fuel use elsewhere in the world.
