The Flashman Papers

Has anyone read this series. My colleagues have pleaded with me to get it as they say the bloke has to be an ancestor of mine. I never heard of him.

But I just ordered a load from Amazon. He looks like a soldier and plays cricket so it looks promising.

Re: The Flashman Papers

I grew up with Flashman ,a bully, liar, coward imposter, eventually reluctant hero,
in Afghanistan.Mine became a Leiutenant Colonel .
The character is a victorian symbol of political incorrectness a nicely crafted tale
may buy it myself

Re: The Flashman Papers

Are we talking Flashman from Tom Brown's Schooldays?

Re: The Flashman Papers

The Flashman series is fantastic. I learned more history reading those books than I ever did at school.

Flashman was involved in every major historical incident of his time and manages to wangle his way out of some awful scrapes. A little known fact - Harry Flashman started the charge of the light brigade (because he had dysentry). I won't explain how - you can read it for yourself!

Oooo. He was the nasty one who tried to toast Tom Brown. Scared the life out of me when I was little. Saw the black and white film just before I started primary. Sshhuudderr!

I love the Flashman novels (despite being a practicing feminist!!!) and I would love to see them serialised on TV.

Re: The Flashman Papers

The first arrives this morning. It is Flash for Freedom which obviously is not the first in the series.

Does anybody know if it is preferable to read them in order?

Cheers

Re: The Flashman Papers

Chronological order or it will be spoiled

Re: The Flashman Papers

They occasionally refer to previous books but each one is self-contained so it should do no harm to start with this one.

Oops, I see that nightshade disagrees! Yes, it would be preferable in chronological order, but not essential.

Re: The Flashman Papers

I ordered the first 3 but they have not arrived in order. I would imagine the first is only days off so I'll put off starting the series until after my exams now. That is enough reading in itself
