| | | Oil Depot Fire Do any of our members live in the area?
I live approx. 20-25 miles away, and heard the blast this morning. The smoke can be seen across the Chilterns, quite an awesome sight to see.
Can't upload any pics at the moment, but will do soon. |

| | | Re: Oil Depot Fire I hadn't watched the news all day so I didn't know about the fire, but I've just put on BBC News 24 and was gobsmacked to see the pictures of the smoke. |

| | | Re: Oil Depot Fire Everything that I've seen and heard on the news so far suggests that no-one has a clue about the effects to the environment as it's completely out of range of anyone's experience. I guess we can just feel lucky that this wasn't a more toxic chemical fire.
Health and safety in these places is supposed to be first class and the design of the installations means that theoretically fire/explosions just shouldn't spread from one tank to another...I hope those theories aren't the same ones that they're using for the more toxic storage facilities. |

| | | Re: Oil Depot Fire The most intriguing statistic that I've heard today is that the fire will destroy less than a days fuel, in other words this country puts that much smoke into the atmosphere every day.
I need lean to my left about 3 feet to see the pall of smoke still undiminished since this morning, although I'm north of the fire so have avoided all the fumes. Woke me up on saturday night though-must have been loud! |

| | | Re: Oil Depot Fire Most of the smoke is carbon particles, I gather, so not desperately polluting. (Mucky but not poisonous) Someone suggested that it was less polluting to burn it this way than if it had been burnt in engines! (All those additives and detergents etc, and incomplete combustion, presumably).
Fire training tomorrow, when no doubt we'll see petrol set deliberately alight so we can try putting it out!
