however we spell it, whatever accent we use and whatever camera we use etc | Well there you go. I never would have imagined that anyone would take this seriously. On this site it is, as you rightly say, of little consequence. Since that is your opinion, as it is mine, why worry about it?
It does illustrate, as I thought it might but hoped it would not, how easily a "joke" comment can go astray. |

You know very well that without it a statement can be taken both ways. Don't come the innocent, you know exactly what reaction you were after.

John | Does this mean that we have to use smileys and other icons in every message on WAB? As far as I can see the use of smileys is an option, I write lots of letters to people and send email messages and don't use smileys. Regardless of whether or not there is smiley there anything that people write can get taken anyway that these person who reads that message chooses. |

Ordinary sentences that convey exactly what you mean doesn't need that. Airheads statement could be taken as meant or a joke. It isn't hard to put a smiley after it defining that it is meant to be a joke.
You are not newcomers to the world of forums and internet chat. You know exactly what I mean without dissecting it.
If you are making a statement like Airhead did it isn't rocket science to make sure which way it is to be taken.
As far as I am concerned I have said my peace. It is obvious exactly what I mean. If anyone tries to imply anything else then as far as I am concerned they are being awkward for awkward sake.

| | | Re: Perceptions, Opinions & Reactions Now someone is offended because I didn't use a Smiley. Well, you certainly can't please everyone. Apparently there are more ways to offend unintentionally than - well I was going to say "than there are ways to skin a squirrel" but that would be naughty, wouldn't it?
if Smilies did their job, this thread might never have got going. John, you might have an understanding about them but I don't.
Has the point still not been taken that it is easy to offend unintentionally and to take offence unrealistically? Let's go to bed until spring. I have come to the conclusion that winter is the silly season here. |

Is this not the case?
Besides, surely it should be 'spelt correctly' as opposed to 'spelled correctly' |

| | | Re: Perceptions, Opinions & Reactions Spelt flour does make very good bread, but as this link says needs to be mixed with white flour if you are going to use it successfully in a bread maker. A little bit of rye four in the mix is also good, IMO.
ps: a spellchecker is all very well but, if you care about these things, won't tell you when you have used "there" instead of "their" or similar. Can't say it matters a hoot to me on a forum like this - at least not in anyone else's posts. I'm sad enough to fiddle with mine to the extent that I just corrected a split infinitive. As if anybody else cared |

jaki | Hi Jaki
I fully appreciate what you say but we have to look at the bigger picture here. It's not just us adults that are reading these forums but youngsters as well. I think Stuart would like this to go into schools as well. Because of this we, as a forum members, bare the added responsibility of how we present ourselves. What you can get away with on other forums will not necessarily be tolerated on this.
This is a total family forum and there is no place for comments like Airheads, unless it is made plain that it is tongue in cheek (which he didn't).
Anybody can see that what he wrote was badly worded without that smiley. I can see no apology forthcoming so to me he meant what he said. If not he should be big enough to at least state that he now recognises that it could have been worded better - don't you think?

John | Hi John, I think that Airehead didnt mean any offence with his comment, at least not the way I read it. Perhaps it is time to allow the subject to drop and move on. If there is any doubt.. give the benefit of the doubt is what I say As you say this is a family forum and perhaps we should consider that threads such as this are being read by our young people and if they read all the angry responses we could say that is as bad as the perceived wrong in the first place
jaki giving off peaceful vibes
