| | | Christmas Decorations I still think it is a bit early to be putting up your xmas decorations, despite most shops having had theirs up for a month, but as more and more houses are becoming brightly lit I wondered who here has decided the time has come to get out the baubles and fairy lights even though December is only 3 days old and did anybody succumb even in November
And is there an actual correct time to be getting out the tree and tinsel
I'm afraid to admit my mum and dad put theirs up yesterday although they said it was my sister's fault |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations In the nearby market town there are houses who have had their decorations up for a month now. I can never understand it. For me they go up the weekend before christmas.. or now i dont have kids at home.. on christmas eve! I didnt have a tree last year, and probably wont this either. I unrolled some gold coloured streamers around the house plants and left it at that.

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations I'm not much of a fan of Christmas, but the Christmas lights which seem to be a current craze, really do brighten up what is a rather miserable time of year.
We always have a real tree and to get the most value out of it, you may as well put it up fairly early. We are putting ours up next weekend.

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations What Christmas Decorations.....we are going to have ours switched on 7th December in Stornoway 2 months behind the mainland. Without being Humbug should we be using that much power...I know lights don't take much but sometimes its over the top. Does the latest craze of outside lights spec. in trees upset the birds????
I'm not all humbug I love tinsel and have a collection of xmas teddies and can't wait for the xmas nibbles etc. I have spent the last 3 Christmas in Edinburgh, first time on the Islands, been promised lots of food, drink and Ceilidhs. |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations One of my neighbours has his house completely covered with lights and lit-up figures every year from 1 December through to 12th night. In spite of the environmental issues, all we locals love it and people come specially to see it. Some of the local children think Father Christmas lives there. There have been occasional sightings, since the chap in question does play Father Christmas at the local Rotary Club and has been known to stroll about in costume on Christmas Eve.
We don't have a tree, but I'm going to put a holly (nicked from a friend) and ivy (from my own garden) wreath on the door about a week before Christmas and hang some baubles on a branch - also from the garden - that we'll bring indoors. |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations I have to say the 2 weeks before and after christmas day sounds about right to me (or should it be 12 days rather than 14 as in the 12 days of christmas).
We also have the local house that is completely covered with lights which can be seen from space (well the nearby A57 at least)
All I can say is I'm glad I don't have their electricity bill as ours is bad enough without them |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations Ours go up Xmas eve, if we put them up any sooner our flipping cats only manage to take them down anyway. We have a very small artificial tree that can be picked up and moved to a room where the cats aren't allowed when we are out because they just love untrimming that as well.

Should I invite the Badgers for Christmas lunch, or do you think I haven't known them long enough? |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations On the local news there was a piece about us all using too much energy followed by a competition to win a grand for the house covered in the most flashing tat. The hypocracy nearly made me ring up and give them an ear bashing. Don't mean to be a scrooge but I hate all the tacky stuff, that's not what chrimbo is about and if you put the decs up too soon you're sick of it all by the time the day arrives. |

| | | Re: Christmas Decorations We usually put ours up 12 days before christmas. This year I'm not so sure as this year we have a dog!! I only want to be putting it up once, not every time she(the dog) knocks it over. As we are decorating I'm not sure that they'll go up on time anyway.
We just have the tree, a bit of tinsel, a few hanging items and a small collection of singing santas. basically for the kids enjoyment.
We have a discreat christmas crib hats given its own special place and its there to remind us that christmas isn't just about all that commercial tat.
Traditionally we like to have it all down by the time the kids go back to school, and before our eldests birthday which usually fall on the same day. However we have a late holiday this year so they don't go back till the following week. We'll probably take it down at the usual time though, as the younger two don't think its fair that the tree is up for her birthday and they aren't allowed it up for theirs. So I expect they'll come down on 2nd Jan.
The kids like the lights and keep asking to do that to our house, not sure. Generally we say NO, light polution, waste of elec and money. Besides the bulbs we'd have to replace!!!
It's bad enough just putting the one working set on the tree.
But we are quite happy to let other people do it, and take the kids round on a tour christmas eve to see them. One of the locals coverts his garage into a grotto and collects for charity on the weekends leading upto christmas.
I suppose its one of those things that Is good, but Bad. | | | | |
