| | | madagascan kingfisher slowly getting there through my pics, thought I'd put this one up here as it's so startlingly similar to our kingfisher....
It is noticibly smaller than our A. atthis and more of a violet blue rather than a tuquoise blue. These gorgeous little elfin birds were seen in a number of locations within Madagascar. |

| | | Re: madagascan kingfisher What a lovely image! I take it they were quite aproachable? The Kingfisher family are very wide spread aren't they? Think the biggest is the Pied Kingfisher from Africa, though the Kookaburra seems quite large too.
edit: correction, The Laughing Kookaburra, at 45 cm is the largest. |

| | | Re: madagascan kingfisher This one was very approachable and was even happy to hunt infront of you, mere feet away. If I hadn't fallen ill I would have spent some serious time with this little bird |

| | | Re: madagascan kingfisher The kookaburra is huge! At least in kingfisher terms...which reminds me of a girl at work who'd never seen a kingfisher, and was shocked to find it wasn't the size of a grey heron! |

edit: correction, The Laughing Kookaburra, at 45 cm is the largest. | Madagascar only has two kingfisher species the one illustrated and a smaller forest dwelling species the pygmy kingfisher which is reddish brown and white (and I didn't get to see it) it's not reliant on water and catches small ground dwelling animals.

Both are Endemic to Madagascar |
