Writing on the wall . . .

Think the writing might be on the wall tonight - its taken me over half an hour to get my machine to connect to the net. . . its getting old and past it (like me!) but this evening it kept on telling me that the phone line was busy. It wasn't - and the phone is working - but the computer thought it wasn't and (also like me!) when it gets an idea in its little noggin there's no shifting it!

Finally after a lot of checking and plugging and unplugging and 4 system restores which have probably confused it to the point of exhaustion - its connected - so I thought I would stick a message on here in case I can't get back on later. If I go missing for weeks on end - you can assume its finally given up the ghost and been booted back to the shop for the umpteenth time! I won't have desserted and I will pay for my order of calendars eventually! And you can imagine the withdrawel symptoms I will be having not able to get on and look at folks' pics etc

Re: Writing on the wall . . .

Pauline, I do hope your machine mends its ways. I have a friend who has similar problems with her connection. I wonder if it is the connection and not the pc?? If not.. santa is around.. send him an old fashioned hand written message.

btw... used to go to Pennington Flash when my parents lived in Leigh. Do the swans still come to be hand fed?

Re: Writing on the wall . . .

Hi Jaki - I've managed a tenuous connection again - fingers crossed it was just a little upset and won't happen again?? I've set a system restore right now and called it dial up working!!

Yes the swans (and coots, moorhens, Canada Geese, mallard etc) are constantly on the look out waiting to mug all the visitors!

A busy day which was lovely until dinner for weather. Then in quick succession we tried to catch a swan with a big hook in its beak, but it wouldn't let us get near and a lady collapsed at the wheel of her car, which resulted in a 999 call and a side trip to hospital for her. Hope she recovers and comes back to visit us. . .

Pauline

Hope you manage to find the swan and get the hook out... darn people... will they never learn. I hope the lady recovers and goes back there too.

I used to buy a nice cup of hot chocolate at one of the kiosks... hmmmm could do with one now

Smash it up, like I did mine. Thus forcing me to buy another, which is far superior and makes surfing a pleasure again

Re: Writing on the wall . . .

Dial up or broadband?

If dial up, and you have BT Answer, or other voicemail, try changing your modem set up in windows to uncheck box that says connect on dial tone, and try to clear all messages before you connect again.

If broadband, check lights, if not all lit, unplug it completely, leave an hour, then connect and try again.

I've got an image in my head of you launching your laptop across the room and then taking a pick axe to it! Or is that to close to the truth?

No I was very calm. I took the leads and cables off, unscrewed the back, took the memory out, went through and put my boots on, then jumped on it and took it out the front and threw it off the floor. It felt good

I used to have a canon 4100 printer that constantly dropped too many sheets into the paper feed and then made a pathetic bleeping noise, one day it all became too much for me so I took it into the kitchen and dropped it on the (quarry tile) floor .... it wasn't so much the paper jams I could put up with that, rather it was that pathetic bleeping noise that it made when it happened that did it I mean it was its fault so why the pathetic bleeping?

No' it was a far more pathetic bleep than that .... a sort of "thin whispering" and slow bleep.

You'd be 'thin whispering' if you'd be dumped on quarry tiles. Poor thing

Seems to me that this was more a case of writing on the floor? What do you say speckled wood?

Re: Writing on the wall . . .

Thanks everyone for help and advice - and the humour At the minute (where's the smilie for fingers crossed??!) its working tho the tower is making unusual noises which I'm lead to believe is the fan beginning to fail. . . yeah its like me - on a stead downhill spiral - but so long as its only steady it will get ignored while ever I can do what I want when I connect up. I've messed with the machine set up and dial up etc in fact I messed with it so badly that I had to do a system restore (3 in fact to get rid of the mess I'd made!!!)

Think Santa might be giving me a miss seeing how I have just ordered a carbon fibre tripod and a grip action head. . . Well I have to have the priorities right and anyway once I've spent it and the goods have arrived the deadly dead is done and can't be undone!!

Re: Writing on the wall . . .

Put the XP disk in, if the XP disk fires up you close it down again. Type sfc /scannow in the run box. Always rule out software screw up before hardware screw up is ruled in. There is a gap before the slash.
