The koala was given its scientific name ( phascolarctos cinereus ) in 1816 meaning 'ash grey pouched bear' . It was later re classified as marsupial. They have been very popular koala teddy bears in the past maybe this perpetuates the incorrect name

The key point here is that although peopkle do eat roo the roos arent shot just for their meat - the meat is a by product of them being controlled as an agricultural pest. - to put it another way not eating them wont prevent them being killed.
