| | | Re: what books have you read........ Terry pratchett's small gods actually played a significant part in changing my life and my view on religion!!! one of my favourite books!!
and I love Celia Ahern's books as they are so different and well written. I love my books about the Endurance (various) about Ernest shackleton's disasterous expedition because if he can get a whole crew through near on 18months of living on pack ice in 1914-17 maybe I can get through my small troubles when they crop up.
Ditto 'touching the void' for similar reasons.
Bambi was my favourite book as a child and one of the few I've read more than once (7 times actually!), still have a soft spot for it along with Di*k-King-Smith's daggie dogfoot, the foxbusters and magnus powermouse...
I read loads...... I think the ones I like best are ones that give me an insight into an otherwise unknown but real life world, but also read anything Bernard Cornwall writes (apart from the sharpe series), anything Micheal Crichton writes and a fair amount of Stephen King who can produce a stunning read above and beyond the standard churn it out bread and butter cheesy horror. books like The girl who loved Tom Gordon and Green Mile I particularly enjoyed. |

Yes, tormentil, three men on a Bummel, I'd forgotten, and there was another as well, in the same series by JKJ, I think.
I also loved reading to my children, gave me a chance to re-read books like the seven C.S.Lewis Narnia ones, E.Nesbitt's Five children and it, etc.
And, unpopularly, Enid Blyton's Malorie Towers books.
I also enjoyed C.S.Lewis's trilogy Voyage to Venus, Out of the silent planet, and That hideous strength.
Used to love What Katy did, What Katy did at shool, and What Katy did next. Can't remember who by!
And there was one last year called Little Green Men which was great. I'll look up author. |

jaki | Not the type of books you want to read just before Christmas admittedly as they are extremely distressing but definitely worth a read. The first book was the most upsetting but once you get over the shock(s) you want to read on and find out how the poor child survives. Very addictive reading but not for the sqeamish. I found it all the more interesting (if that's the right word to use) because it really happened - you couldn't make it up.

| | | Re: what books have you read........ Can I suggest any of Bill Bryson's travel books, all are very light and humorous. Philip Pullman's trilogy The Dark Materials although aimed at teenagers are very good. And for those needing something more solid to read, the following three books by Knight and Lomas should be fine. Uriels Machine traces the history of science in Europe starting some 5000 years ago. Very interesting, they even tell you how to build Uriels machine and explain why, they think, the standing stones were erected. The Hiram key and the Book of Hiram, well I'll let you find out for yourselves. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
