Powercuts!!!!

Am sitting here in the dark with only the light from my laptop enduring another powercut. This is the second this week.. the last one was five hours long and this one will be at least three hours according to the help line. What I would like to know is what battery or gas lanterns do you use.. which one lasts the longest.. in other words.. the brightest, longest lasting and of course cheapest.

jaki seeking the light!!

Re: Powercuts!!!!

.... and most environmentally friendly?
Get a candle, curl up in bed with a good book and hope everything will be better tomorrow!
Why the powercuts?

Of course Paul... that goes without saying if I am asking all you wildlifers but a candle in a bedroom.. not environmentaly friendly.. at least not if I fell asleep with it on. I wish I knew what was the cause..we just need an extra sparrow in the village and the power goes off...

Re: Powercuts!!!!

No, you're probably right but I remember winter evenings with no alternative! Hope it improves, sorry, no useful suggestions .....

Re: Powercuts!!!!

Get a moth trap, you can have light and study nature at the same time, the smaller actinic models run off a 12 volt battery for over 12 hours - only joking

On a more serious note when we get power cuts I use a couple of camping gaz lights that are similar to the old Tilley lamps in construction, they give out excellent light, they are safe, and they are very cheap to run.

Re: Powercuts!!!!

We had no electricity for a whole week after the hurricane. It was a nightmare. You really don't know how much you rely on it until you don't have it. We are at the end of a power line (strung through the woods!) with only 2 houses on it - so we were the last to be reconnected around here

Our solution - we bought a generator (after the event). I know it is not the most environmentally friendly but if there is a choice between our sanity and the environment, I know which I would choose.

The good news is that we have hardly had to use it.

Jenny

Re: Powercuts!!!!

When I go camping I use a candle and candle holder which I feel is also safe to use in the house

Candle Lantern by - Cotswold Outdoor Ltd

Two of my friends have these and they throw out masses of light and seem to last a reasonable length of time

Shop for Campingaz Bleuet CV270 Lantern. at Argos.co.uk

PS dont actually buy it from Argos as I dont like them

I have the older none rechargable version of this lantern and it seems to eat batteries because of the battery life I bought my candle as a backup light source plus I think it looks cool. How long does this lantern burn for on one charge as i have considered buying it

Re: Powercuts!!!!

thank you Roger, Eeyore, they are both of interest. I do use candles when the power goes off but it isnt enough to read comfortably. .not even with the half dozen i put on a raised holder!
The rechargable lantern looks good.. but yes it is expensive. I also like the campingaz lantern... lots to think about.. thanks again

Re: Powercuts!!!!

Candles are dangerous. Gas lamps must have adequate ventilation
that really leaves only LEDs up to 10 hours on a set of batteries
there are some good multi led lamps around(and some bad ones)

The storm in Oct.'87 wasn't a hurricane, it was classified as a severe storm with the odd gust of hurricane force. When we get a hurricane there will be much more damage & deaths.

Not when used properly - I wouldn't be without them.

The worst thing about powercuts for me is that they make my alarm system bleep continuously and annoyingly - it's to tell me that the power has gone off (no lights, no wireless, no CD player, no cooker are not big enough clues, apparently!). And you can't turn it off, so I have to wedge a duvet over the box if I want to sleep!
