Re: Christmas Present Ideas

No reflection on this book which I haven't read but any of the books by Oliver Rackham on the history of the British countryside can't be beaten ...
And why just books?

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

oops i missed the 5-10 pound bit.

Not sure really. Maybe some identification books if you know someone hasn't got one already on birds/ fungi or whatever.
Compass could be useful if someone is an avid hillwalker.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

A book in which I could I.D. feathers would be good, and a tree book that eliminated types by leaf shape etc., for someone (me) who hasn't got a clue where to start. And a huge insect book, ditto spider book... Oh just book tokens and several days with sandwiches and a thermos flask in a huge bookshop. Oh, and one of those night vision scopes, please Santa!

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Also, I would like courage, so that I could go and sit in the wilds of my garden for hours in the middle of the night, in thermals of course, and watch all the nocturnal creatures living their lives. That would be the best present ever.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Jaki it was a suggested starting point ;
Books because a lot of new members need books and ideas
Odds and Ends £5-10 because people like stocking fillers or just inexpensive gifts
It is your list I just put in a few starter suggestions

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Seen in a discount bookshop last week - no idea of the correct title - Thomas Hardy poetry. Couldn't think of anyone to give it to, but I'd like a copy myself.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

I sometimes do a wild life nightwatch Badgerwatcher. My dogs take care of any intrusive rats that venture from the undergrowth. I dont know why they have such an aversion to them particularly as they are otherwise content to lie silently at my side and let all other creatures get on with their lives.

If father Christmas decides to give you a night scope could I come round and borrow it?
(Smile, just kidding!)

My Christmas wish is for a streaming webcam, so I can watch wildlife at any time day or night. (Well one can dream...can't they? Smile)

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Thanks for the book titles, nightshade. I was hoping someone would recommend some. Would you recommend the Opticron, then? £59 is remarkably cheaper than I had thought the bottom of the range would be. I bought my son a night vision scope years ago, before I really knew what they were, as he goes camping a lot in the New Forest area, and I paid about £150-£200 for it. Don't know what make it was, but he was pleased with it. I couldn't afford to buy myself one like that at the moment, but might try the one you suggest if it's ok.
You're lucky you have protective dogs, snowdrop. My dog is a bit of a wimp, much as I love her, which is fortunate really because she's not worrying the Badgers or foxes, apart from the odd run through the garden to show them she's here. I've never heard of a streaming webcam. That sounds fun. I must investigate. I'm finding I hardly have time to go to work, there's so much to watch here. It takes me hours to put the laundry away, because I pass so many windows, and there's always something going on in the gardens!

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

For a good read, rather than some of excellent field guides that have come out this year, what about 1 of the New Naturalists volumes that have recently appeared on Gower, Bumblebees or Woodlands- good stuff to share the sofa with.

A real cheapie- the new FSC laminated Ladybird ID chart.

Year's subscription to British Dragonfly Society- one of best value subs around. Not too heavy for Santa to deliver!

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Have you tried mirrors around your desk, Jaki, that might reflect the garden, even angled on the ceiling? I put mirrors everywhere for that reason, as they help me see round corners.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

And a present I would like to give everyone is an hour at a window watching bird feeders in a tree with a pair of good binoculars. It is really good for reducing high blood pressure, and calming frazzled spirits!
