Speaking of presants, how about Badgers by Ernest Neal and Chris Cheeseman, Poyser Natural History, ISBN:0-85661-082-8. Tells you all you'll need to know about their natural history.
Alternatively, search the secondhand market for books by Chris Ferris: Out of the Darkness, The Darkness is Light Enough, The Badgers of Ashcroft Woods and Green-eyed Flo. They're accounts from the night-time wanderings and adventures of a Badger watcher.

Still, might be interesting to try to live with it ....
One present, which is always worth thinking about is seeds - packets of seeds - fairly cheap and you can tailor the gift exactly to what the recipient needs, wants, likes, where they live &c ... Trees, vegetable, indoor, alpine, annual, herb - so many options .... Quote:

| | | Re: Christmas Present Ideas Thanks for book details, Alan. They're now on my list! So I'm ok to use flash without hurting their eyes? I'm talking only a few feet away, hopefully, and have decided to get them gradually used to my presence out there while they eat before I try any more photographs. They're getting enough hassle with the fireworks at the moment. |

Following up from the other thread. You can get quite cheap but useful loupes (flip-out magnifying lenses) and penkinves with all sorts of useful gadgets ... both essential when you're dealing with many insects .... Quote:

I must be the only person who doesn't get greenfly or blackfly on her nasturtiums. I get small white caterpillars instead.

No Steve is a geneticist who has done a lot of his research on snails, which are helical, hence the play on words. The book is based around a collection of his columns from the Telegraph on various science issues written in a witty and intelligent manner and is a great read.

| | | Re: Christmas Present Ideas If you or yours would like an insight into how the countryside used to work there are several books by Jack Hargreaves and DVD's of his wonderful television series "Out of Town"
I would love a copy of his book Fishing for a Week, but at £45 it is too expensive for me
(cannot get a copy from the library either)
