Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Price of fuel today I keep looking at Tom Tom GPS but think that a hand-held would be more useful, maps are fine but to locate a particular spot again (where you have found Adders for
instance)GPS is the one

Drat, shame I didn't read this before posting .... Perhaps if I'm very quiet this weekend, I'll still have some luck?

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

I've realised what I need is a tripod for my camera, if Father Christmas is still listening! So many photographs slightly blurred, especially night-time no-flash ones, which I like taking. Still getting to know my camera.

Don't worry about using flash. They'll soon get used to it.

Speaking of presants, how about Badgers by Ernest Neal and Chris Cheeseman, Poyser Natural History, ISBN:0-85661-082-8. Tells you all you'll need to know about their natural history.

Alternatively, search the secondhand market for books by Chris Ferris: Out of the Darkness, The Darkness is Light Enough, The Badgers of Ashcroft Woods and Green-eyed Flo. They're accounts from the night-time wanderings and adventures of a Badger watcher.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Money, who needs it?
Still, might be interesting to try to live with it ....

One present, which is always worth thinking about is seeds - packets of seeds - fairly cheap and you can tailor the gift exactly to what the recipient needs, wants, likes, where they live &c ... Trees, vegetable, indoor, alpine, annual, herb - so many options ....

Voted Best Photography Product 2006 by computer shopper;
Sony DSC-W30 (6.0mp) A very pocketable camera with a good macro mode(named DSC-W50 with a larger screen) dearer but still very pocketable the Sony DSC-T30 (7.2mp) has a very good write up in the same magazine (Best Buy)

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Thanks for book details, Alan. They're now on my list! So I'm ok to use flash without hurting their eyes? I'm talking only a few feet away, hopefully, and have decided to get them gradually used to my presence out there while they eat before I try any more photographs. They're getting enough hassle with the fireworks at the moment.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Oh yes, indeed - easy, colourful, massive and supports aphids for the ladybirds!

Following up from the other thread. You can get quite cheap but useful loupes (flip-out magnifying lenses) and penkinves with all sorts of useful gadgets ... both essential when you're dealing with many insects ....

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

Oh, you have reminded me of something that I would like, Paul. One of those hand held magnifying glasses with the light built in - they are extremely useful.

I must be the only person who doesn't get greenfly or blackfly on her nasturtiums. I get small white caterpillars instead.

Ha, good point. No Steve is a geneticist who has done a lot of his research on snails, which are helical, hence the play on words. The book is based around a collection of his columns from the Telegraph on various science issues written in a witty and intelligent manner and is a great read.

Re: Christmas Present Ideas

If you or yours would like an insight into how the countryside used to work there are several books by Jack Hargreaves and DVD's of his wonderful television series "Out of Town"
I would love a copy of his book Fishing for a Week, but at £45 it is too expensive for me
(cannot get a copy from the library either)
