| | | Re: Happy Halloween I have had a few kiddys around tonight.I was all ready with a bowl of sweets and choccy bickies. They were all very polite and didnt try to grab loads. Most were with parents or older sisters.Offered the older kids sweets too but they declined and said they were only there for the little ones,so I let them dip in again.I must be lucky in my area have never had problems but then they all know I usually have sweeties as my grandchildren knock on the front door too and bring their friends |

| | | Re: Happy Halloween We carved a great big pumpkin and put him outside in the porch - he looked great. Only had two trick or treaters come to the door. Two little lads, who had taken a lot of trouble to dress up really well. They we're under ten years old, so the age we were quite happy to open the door to. They got a mini mars bar each for their trouble and seemed quite happy with that. A great deal of giggling and off they went. Thats how it should be really, I think giving money is a mistake, it just encourages the troublesome teenagers who wouldn't actually bother for a mars bar. It was all good fun really.
I guess we're lucky to live where we do. |

| | | Re: Happy Halloween I had decided that no child would brave our front garden in the dark, hallowe'en or not, as it is as wild and overgrown as the back, and rustles with retreating wildlife in an interesting way, so I'd forgotten about it, hadn't bought sweets or anything. I'd just burnt the roast pumpkin wedges, so the house was full of smoke and my guard was down when the door-bell rang. We all scurried around looking for the key to unlock the door, as they'd rung the side door bell which we keep locked. When we opened the door, three quite large, maybe teenage figures stood there, dressed suitably scarily. "Ooh!" I said, genuinely startled. "Sorry," said one of them. "Good evening. Trick or treat. Raaagh!" (all spoken very politely including the roar.)
"Oh, hang on, I'll find you some change," I said, charmed by the politeness, and disappeared into the smoke, shouting as I went, "sorry, it's a big house!" "It's a very nice house," said one of the ghouls politely. My partner appeared, and gave them some change. "Oh, thank you very much," they chorused. "Goodnight!" and left, down the side path, remembering to shut the gate! |

| | | Re: Happy Halloween One of the benefits of living in the middle of nowhere, as I do, is that we don't get things like trick or treater's, free newspapers and rarely anyone selling things
There is a downside though - I was reading the other thread about fish and chips longingly. It would be lovely to pop out to a fish and chip shop on occasions, or any kind of takeaway, in fact. I really don't want a 12 mile round trip for my fish and chips and they would be cold by the time I got them back, anyway

Jenny | I used to live 7 miles away from a small town where you had more horses on the road than cars and trust me Jenny it's better than being stuck in town!! Is nice if you've got a good friendly local boozer though |

Actually, I don't think I could live in a town, although nice to visit on occasions. These days I am happiest in my garden watching the wildlife. In fact, I think I am becoming a bit of a recluse!

Jenny | Yes, it's a real problem when Post offices and shops get closed down.
I can't wait to live in the middle of nowhere again! |
