| | | Fish and Chips Is anyone aware of what chips are fried in on the East Coast of England? Our local chip shops fry chips in vegetable oil but I was shocked and horrified to find out that chips are fried in beef dripping on the East Coast where we have just spent the half term holiday. No more chips for me on holiday! (Well not from the chip shops - though we did find one little take away that fried chips in vegetable oil).
I'm not after another vegetarian debate - I just wondered if anyone else was aware...
Also - do you know what your local chip shops use? (In case I go on holiday near where you live!)

Where you get chips in posh restaraunts, its almost a given that they will be fried in beef dripping.
Good on them I say.
If people eat it everyday and get heart desease its their own fault. If they eat it occasionally and enjoy it, great.
Most chip shops near me use vegetable oil, unfortunately. |

| | | Re: Fish and Chips Also, i would like to add that a lot of fish and chip shops fry their chips in hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil, both of which are high in trans fats. Trans fat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

| | | Re: Fish and Chips Lincs yellowbelly....most places are making people choose haddock now because there's no cod left from overfishing
As for chips in beef fat... well they usually smell disgusting to me so I can tell. I was also shocked when I went to north-east yorks to find that all the chips were either fried in animal fat or old stinky fat, yuk... and I didn't try anything from the famous Magpie restaurant where there were massive queues to get in.

It does sound plausible. I suppose not too much fish is actually landed at Grimsby these days?

Matt | Grimsby has one of the most upto date modern fish markets in the country, and is still a big player when it comes to fish imports - but hardly anyting landed. It's a 'middle-man' fish town now.
Unfortunately if you take a look at the fish dock today, you'll soon see there's only a handful of small trawlers left. Most of the docks now are home to yacht clubs. No deep-sea fleet anymore containing hundreds of vessels. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me down there on his shoulders. You couldn't see the water in the docks because the trawlers were packed so tightly!
They're all gone now, along with all the livelyhoods it supported. Nobodies fault but are own for the rape of the seas.
The Icelandic had it right, they put quoters and exclusion zones on decades ago (hense the 'Cod Wars'). No wonder they still have viable stocks left! |
